New Scholarship Program Offers 10 Million Yen to Help Young Students Study Abroad Without Financial Worries

Introduction to the New Scholarship Initiative

Beyond Japan, a startup based in Tokyo, has unveiled an ambitious scholarship program designed to support students aspiring to study abroad, specifically through a transfer system from community colleges to four-year universities in North America. This unique initiative aims to eliminate the financial burdens that often deter young people from pursuing overseas education. The application period for this program runs from March 31, 2026, to April 20, 2026, and is open to individuals aged 18 and older, including those who hold high school equivalency certifications.

The Current Landscape of Study Abroad in Japan

Despite the increasing global interconnectedness, Japan continues to lag significantly behind countries like South Korea and China in terms of the number of students studying abroad. Recent statistics (Open Doors 2024) indicate that the number of American study abroad students from South Korea is approximately 7.6 times that of Japan, while China has about 1.8 times more students per capita. A 2024 survey conducted by the “Tobitate! Study Abroad JAPAN” initiative highlighted that financial constraints remain the leading reason for Japanese students opting out of overseas studies. With the yen's depreciation and rising tuition costs, creating opportunities for students to access study abroad programs without facing economic hardships is increasingly essential.

Scholarship Program Details

The scholarship specifically focuses on supporting students who wish to transition from community colleges in the United States to four-year universities across North America. Beyond Japan offers comprehensive assistance throughout the two-year study journey, including application preparation, course registration, extracurricular activity guidance, and personalized feedback on transfer essays—all at no cost.

Overview of the Transfer Process

The program tackles the misconception that only elite students can be accepted into prestigious universities. Instead, it provides a feasible route for those who start their studies at a community college and meet certain performance and extracurricular activity criteria to transfer into the third year of a four-year university. This approach can save over 10 million yen in tuition costs compared to entering a four-year university in the first year.

Key Aspects of the Scholarship

  • - Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years or older, or have passed a high school equivalency examination, and plan to pursue formal studies abroad this academic year.
  • - Funding Amount: The scholarship will provide 1 million or 1.5 million yen annually (amount varies based on the number of recipients and financial necessity), for a total maximum of 10 million yen over two years.
  • - Hiring Target: Up to five students will be selected for this scholarship.
  • - Application Requirements: Candidates must demonstrate English proficiency through IELTS (score of 6.0), TOEFL iBT (score of 80), or Duolingo (score of 110).
  • - Selection Process: The selection involves a two-stage process, including document review, an interview, and assessments of basic abilities, as well as a final interview focused on the applicant's motivations, academic interests, and future plans considering their financial needs.
  • - Continuing Conditions: Renewal is subject to annual reviews. If initial performance or extracurricular activity participation falls below set standards, scholars may lose eligibility for subsequent funding.
  • - Application Period: March 31, 2026 - April 20, 2026.
