APUS Earns Prestigious USDLA Compass Award for Mental Health Innovations
The American Public University System (APUS) has recently been honored with the
2026 Distance Learning Compass Award by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) for its groundbreaking efforts in promoting mental health and wellness among its online learners. This prestigious recognition is a testament to APUS’s innovative digital-first ecosystem designed to foster student well-being and academic success.
Located in Charles Town, West Virginia, APUS serves a diverse student body of nearly
89,000 active learners, many of whom are affiliated with the military. The university has developed comprehensive resources that include
24/7 teletherapy and crisis support, access to licensed counselors, and a global peer-support network that operates in
25 languages. These services are designed to enhance the student experience and promote persistence and success, addressing the unique challenges faced by online learners.
Erika Orris, Senior Vice President of Operations for APUS, emphasized the link between student success and well-being, stating, "We believe student success is inseparable from student well-being. We're honored to win this award and proud of the collaborative effort across our community to ensure that online learners - especially those balancing work, family, and military service - can access meaningful mental health services whenever needed."
In addition to on-demand teletherapy, APUS also provides chaplain services designed to assist students through guidance, stress management tools, and non-denominational support. This holistic approach is geared toward helping students navigate both the academic rigors of online learning and their personal lives.
Community is crucial to the APUS experience, and the university encourages student involvement through more than
75 student-run organizations that have engaged around
72,000 students since their establishment. These organizations promote connection and a sense of belonging, which are essential elements for maintaining mental health and fostering persistence in studies.
Moreover, APUS strives to extend its wellness initiatives throughout the university community. Regular professional development sessions focused on resilience and supporting learners dealing with stress or burnout are offered not just for students but also for faculty, showcasing a comprehensive approach to mental well-being.
Nuno Fernandes, President of APUS, articulated the importance of combining strong academic programs with wellness support, remarking, "By integrating rigorous academic coursework with extensive wellness resources, we guide students in building resilience and adaptability, skills that are vital for success both personally and professionally. Mental health and well-being are foundational to student achievement, reinforcing their educational journey and shaping their post-graduate identities."
The
USDLA Compass Award is presented annually to institutions and programs that excel in delivering exceptional support services to enhance student engagement, well-being, and academic outcomes in virtual learning environments. Through this prestigious recognition, USDLA aims to connect innovative practices and policies that maximize the impact of distance and digital learning.
