INEOS Teamsters in Ohio Authorize Strike Amid Contract Dispute and Worker Concerns

Strike Authorization by INEOS Teamsters in Ohio

In a significant move, members of Teamsters Local 377, representing workers at INEOS, have given their unanimous approval to strike in light of ongoing disputes over their collective bargaining agreement, which is set to expire on March 31. This decision comes just three years after workers previously went on strike to secure their first collective agreement.

The union's members have expressed their frustrations regarding INEOS's treatment of employees, highlighting a persistent pattern of disrespect during contract negotiations. According to Steven Anzevino, President of Local 377, employees have been subjected to an increasingly poor working environment, which is further exacerbated by a high demand for overtime work that remains uncompensated adequately.

"Our members put in extensive hours, often clocking hundreds of hours of overtime annually, all while facing severe understaffing issues," Anzevino stated. He emphasized that the well-being of workers and their families is being compromised for corporate profits, revealing a troubling disconnect between management and staff.

The collective bargaining discussions have included numerous meetings with INEOS management, yet most proposals from the company have felt insulting to the workers. For instance, there have been discussions around slashing sick days and personal leave, even as the staffing crisis continues to mount. Julie Bihlajama, Secretary-Treasurer of International Chemical Workers Union Council (ICWUC) Local 1033C, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the unreasonableness of cutting sick leave while demanding even more overtime from workers who are already stretched thin, managing between 500 to 1,300 overtime hours per year.

"We are not machines; we are human beings, and we deserve to be treated as such," Bihlajama implored, revealing the emotional weight placed on the workers due to the current demands of management. She stressed that the focus should be on the health and well-being of the employees rather than excessive corporate profits.

The union has indicated that a further strike may extend to the 66 chemical workers also covered by a joint agreement, represented by ICWUC Local 1033C, should negotiations fail to yield a satisfactory agreement by the end of this month.

Union steward Nathan Summers provided additional clarity regarding the ongoing negotiations, accusing management of engaging in surface bargaining tactics. He pointed out that the proposals to cut down on sick days while pushing for increased mandatory overtime are counterproductive and unrealistic, stating, "The company is clearly aware that these will not be accepted by the workforce."

As tensions mount, the workers at INEOS represent a wider demographic of labor issues faced across various sectors in Northeastern Ohio. The solidarity shown by the Teamsters signifies a critical push for recognition and respect within the workplace as they prepare to take a stand for their rights.

With the deadline approaching, the industrial landscape in Ohio remains precariously balanced, reflecting broader themes of labor struggles that are being documented across the nation. The commitment of these workers to stand firm in their demands indicates that the fight for fair labor practices is far from over, and this upcoming strike may lead to decisive changes in labor relations at INEOS if resolutions are not reached in time.
