On March 30, 2026, the highly anticipated torch relay for the 6th Asian Beach Games, also known as Sanya 2026, set the stage for an exciting series of events along the picturesque coast of Sanya, China. With the theme "Passing on Friendship, Meeting in Sanya," this relay featured a vibrant assembly of 74 torchbearers, who traversed approximately 10.5 kilometers along the stunning Sanya Bay. This event not only celebrates sporting excellence but also symbolizes unity and camaraderie among nations.
An Unforgettable Ceremony
The festivities kicked off with a solemn flame lighting ceremony at Sanya's prominent southern cauldron, which had previously been a centerpiece during the 11th Asian Games. The luminous flame was ignited by a special guest, signaling the start of an incredible journey. The torch was first carried by CHANG Yani, the champion of the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard diving event at the Paris Olympic Games. Her enthusiastic remarks highlighted the significance of the occasion: "With the vast sea right beside me, the feeling is truly special."
A Unique Route
The relay route was ingeniously designed to incorporate beach, road, and maritime segments, showcasing the natural beauty of Sanya. Trailblazers included celebrated Olympic champions like SHI Zhiyong from weightlifting, LIU Shiwen from women's table tennis, JIANG Ranxin of shooting, and QI Guangpu of freestyle skiing aerials. Each participant added to the excitement and honor of carrying the torch, motivating others to embrace the spirit of the Games.
Cultural Festivities
Spectators were treated to a magnificent display of cultural performances that entertained and engaged the audience. The event featured thrilling water sports performances including jet-ski stunts, flyboarding, and traditional artistic displays such as Li brocade fashion showcases, bamboo pole dances, Qiong opera, and vibrant Yazhou folk songs. One of the highlights was the robotics lion dance and drumming performance at the Sanya International Yachting Center, which beautifully combined modern technology with traditional artistry.
A Commitment to Sustainability
CAO Shoubin, Operations Director of the Sanya 2026 Torch Relay Team, expressed the event's commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the principles of being "green, shared, open, and integrity-driven." This approach allowed participants and the global audience to experience firsthand Sanya's enchanting landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant community spirit.
