National Safety Council Advocates for Vehicle Safety Recalls Awareness Week to Protect Drivers
National Safety Council Advocates for Vehicle Safety Recalls Awareness Week
From March 3 to March 9, the National Safety Council (NSC) is leading a nationwide initiative to promote vehicle safety during the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Recalls Week. This campaign urges all vehicle owners to check their vehicles' recall statuses to prevent accidents and enhance road safety.
Currently, almost 57 million vehicles—equivalent to one in five on U.S. roads—are associated with unrepaired safety recalls. These recalls pertain to crucial safety aspects, including airbags, steering mechanisms, and braking systems. The NSC’s Check to Protect campaign simplifies the process for drivers to ensure their vehicles are safe by allowing them to easily verify their recall status. Safety experts advise checking for recalls regularly, ideally during routine service appointments or at least quarterly, as new issues can arise at any time.
Lonny Haschel, a senior program manager with the Mobility Safety Impact Program at NSC, emphasizes, "Road safety is a top priority for all users of our roadways. With millions of vehicles on the road that have unrepaired safety recalls, it is vital for drivers to take a proactive approach in ensuring their vehicles are safe. NSC encourages every driver to check for recalls and have them repaired at no cost as soon as possible. A safer environment for all is created when vehicle recalls are properly addressed."
Drivers looking to verify their vehicle's recall can visit CheckToProtect.org, where they can easily enter their license plate number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or simply upload a photograph of either component. If a recall is identified, drivers can obtain the necessary repairs at no charge at any authorized dealer, irrespective of where the vehicle was originally purchased. It's important to note that any information submitted will solely be used to identify outstanding recalls, ensuring user privacy.
