Vietnam is taking significant strides toward sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development, as evidenced by the recent International Conference on SAF held in Hanoi. This event gathered policymakers, aviation regulators, airlines, fuel suppliers, technology providers, and various international organizations to discuss vital policy frameworks and market development for SAF in Asia.

The conference was co-organized by the Global Centre for Green Fuels (GCGF) and the Vietnam Academy of Construction Strategy and Cadres Training (ACST), both under the Ministry of Construction. The Asia Pacific Sustainable Aviation Centre (APSAC) also lent its support, showcasing a unified commitment to advancing sustainable aviation practices in the region.

Opening the conference, Vice Minister Le Anh Tuan from the Ministry of Construction emphasized the increasing importance of SAF as a pivotal element in the aviation sector’s decarbonization efforts. He reaffirmed Vietnam's ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and articulated the need for a tailored roadmap that aligns with the nation's unique circumstances. This roadmap aims to balance essential factors such as emissions reduction, energy security, and business competitiveness.

The gathering of officials and industry stakeholders reflects a regional initiative wherein multiple Asia-Pacific nations are investigating strategies for decarbonizing aviation while ensuring continued air travel growth. Key discussions revolved around the development of SAF policies, market creation, technology pathways, and supply chain considerations necessary for the sector's evolution.

One of the keynote speakers, Mr. Subash S., Deputy Regional Director of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Asia and Pacific Office, underscored SAF's essential role within ICAO's overarching goals of reaching net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. His insights highlighted not only the importance of national SAF roadmaps but also the need for unified policy frameworks and extensive collaboration among government entities, industry, and financial institutions to effectively support SAF deployment.

The conference provided participants with regional perspectives and firsthand experiences regarding policy frameworks, certification requirements, market development, technology pathways, and supply chain logistics pertaining to SAF. Such exchanges are anticipated to significantly influence Vietnam’s strategic assessments and planning regarding SAF development moving forward.

Beyond simply addressing emissions reduction, the discussions indicated that SAF development could offer Vietnam numerous additional opportunities. Participants highlighted the potential for the country to emerge as a key player in regional SAF value chains, exploring opportunities linked to feedstock supply, fuel production, infrastructure development, and investment. Moreover, they discussed the critical policies and market conditions necessary to underpin sustainable long-term growth in this sector.

Mr. Clarence Woo, Managing Director of GCGF, remarked on the necessity for coordinated actions that span across multiple sectors including aviation, energy, agriculture, industry, and finance. He noted that this conference is a vital platform for dialogue, enabling the sharing of regional experiences and insights as Vietnam charts its course toward SAF development.

Adding to this, Mr. Philip Goh, CEO of APSAC, emphasized the crucial role of regional cooperation and capacity-building in promoting SAF development throughout Asia-Pacific. He pointed out the distinct feedstock resources, policy approaches, and market conditions within different countries, advocating the sharing of experiences to foster more informed pathways for SAF adoption.

The conference program featured contributions from ICAO representatives, civil aviation authorities from Southeast Asia, and several industry leaders, including major players such as Vietnam Airlines, Airbus, Boeing, SAFCo, Taiyo Oil, and LanzaTech. Highlights from the discussions not only addressed the potential benefits associated with SAF deployment but also acknowledged the significant challenges that lie ahead. Nonetheless, there was a shared understanding of the imperative for coordinated action, both between governmental and industrial stakeholders, to effectively advance the future of SAF development in Vietnam.
