The Rist Kaggle Team has made headlines recently by clinching a gold medal in the prestigious "AI Mathematical Olympiad - Progress Prize 2" competition hosted on Kaggle, one of the world's leading data science platforms. The event ran from October 17, 2024, to April 1, 2025, attracting thousands of participants drawn to tackle high-difficulty mathematical problems akin to those found in mathematics olympiads, using artificial intelligence (AI) to find solutions.

A Competitive Landscape

Participating in this spirited competition were 2,670 participants across 2,211 teams. Among these competitors, Chen Jian, a Kaggle Grandmaster who is part of the Rist Kaggle Team, achieved an impressive individual ranking of 7th. Furthermore, the team that included fellow Kaggle Grandmaster Dai-Ki Yamaguchi ranked 9th, leading to their remarkable win of the gold medal, a testament to their exceptional skills and teamwork.

Chen Jian shared his reflections on the experience, highlighting that the competition's theme resonated strongly with contemporary issues regarding large language model (LLM) technology. He expressed excitement for leveraging recent advancements in reinforcement learning, although time constraints limited his capacity to deploy a reinforcement learning solution. Instead, he focused on optimizing existing open models using strategies such as KV cache quantization to alleviate bandwidth issues and dynamically adjusting inference parameters based on real-time profiling. While Chen believed luck played a significant role in their victory, he was optimistic about applying the insights gained to future challenges.

Dai-Ki Yamaguchi, also reflecting on the competition, noted the thrill of participating during a time when the release of high-accuracy open-source LLMs positively influenced the leaderboard.
