U.S. Lumber Coalition Welcomes President Trump's Trade Actions to Tackle Unfair Import Practices

U.S. Lumber Coalition Applauds President Trump's Steps Against Unfair Trade

The U.S. Lumber Coalition has expressed strong support for President Donald Trump's recent actions aimed at investigating unfair trade practices, particularly concerning the lumber industry. On March 2, 2025, President Trump ordered a thorough investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. This initiative seeks to assess how foreign government subsidies and predatory trade practices affect U.S. lumber producers.

Andrew Miller, Chair/Owner of Stimson Lumber Company, articulated the concerns of American lumber producers, emphasizing that the Canadian federal and provincial governments provide subsidies to their lumber industry. These subsidies lead to excess Canadian lumber production, which is then sold at unfair prices in the U.S. market, putting American companies and workers at a significant disadvantage.

In his statement, Miller voiced, "We know that foreign governments such as Canadian federal and provincial governments subsidize the Canadian lumber industry to promote employment and disruptive excess Canadian lumber production. This situation is detrimental to U.S. companies and workers." His sentiments echo the frustrations of many in the U.S. lumber community who feel the pressures of unfair competition.

Miller further praised President Trump’s decisive action, remarking that the exhaustive enforcement of antidumping and countervailing duty trade laws, paired with the current investigation, will significantly curb the harmful impacts of foreign trade practices in the lumber sector. He expressed gratitude, stating, "Thank you, President Trump!"

The U.S. Lumber Coalition represents an alliance of softwood lumber producers, encompassing both large and small companies throughout the nation, along with their employees and woodland owners. Its core mission is to advocate against what it perceives as Canada's unfair lumber trade practices. By serving as the voice for the American lumber community, the Coalition aims to ensure proper enforcement of U.S. trade laws, allowing the domestic industry to flourish and grow without the detrimental influence of unfairly traded imports.

Moreover, the Coalition insists that ongoing enforcement of U.S. trade laws is crucial for reinforcing domestic supply lines. This will ultimately maximize the long-term production and availability of lumber sourced from U.S. workers—materials vital for constructing American homes.

In light of these developments, the U.S. Lumber Coalition is optimistic about the future of the American lumber industry and its ability to compete on fair terms. By taking a stand against unjust trade practices, the Coalition believes it can foster an environment that benefits U.S. workers and supports the growth of the domestic lumber market.
