The Importance of ILD Day: Raising Awareness for Lung Diseases in America

ILD Day on September 10: A Call to Action

September 10 marks the fifth annual ILD Day, an important initiative launched by eleven leading health advocacy organizations to raise awareness about interstitial lung diseases (ILD), including these over 200 debilitating conditions that impact more than 250,000 people across the United States.

This national awareness day aims to highlight the significance of early diagnosis, ongoing research, and essential support systems for those affected by these serious lung diseases. The initiative will focus on educating the public about ILD, its symptoms, and its impact on individuals and their families.

What is Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)?

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) refers to a collection of serious lung disorders that cause scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs. When the tissue around the air sacs in the lungs becomes inflamed and stiff, it severely impacts the ability to breathe. The common thread among ILD patients is that they experience the progression of lung damage that could lead to serious health complications, including respiratory failure.
