Renewable Energy Challenges: The Role of Photovoltaic Safety in Europe's Rising Temperatures

The Urgent Need for Photovoltaic Safety in Europe

As Europe endures frequent and intense heatwaves across its southern and central regions, the implications for solar energy infrastructure are becoming increasingly urgent. These soaring temperatures pose significant challenges to the efficiency and safety of photovoltaic (PV) systems, which are rapidly expanding across the continent. Recent trends indicate that while innovations in photovoltaic technology have historically centered on improving efficiency and reducing costs, there is now a pressing need to prioritize safety—an area notably underscored by rising climatic conditions.

The Significance of Safety

AIKO, a leading name in the solar industry, is stepping up to the challenge by focusing on the safety features of its solar modules. The company’s All Back Contact (ABC) modules not only stand out for their aesthetics and high efficiency but also for their superior safety performance. These modules have made history as the first in the world to obtain the "PV Module Anti-Ignition Hazard" certification from TÜV Rheinland. Under rigorous test conditions, the ABC modules demonstrated hotspot temperatures more than 35% lower than traditional modules. This achievement highlights their enhanced ability to mitigate thermal risks associated with localized overheating.

Innovative Technology for the Future

The ABC technology is engineered specifically to keep hotspot temperatures below 100°C in actual operating conditions, thereby reducing excessive thermal stress and minimizing potential ignition risks. This safety advantage has been validated through shading comparative tests, where the ABC modules consistently recorded significantly lower hotspot temperatures compared to conventional alternatives, even under conditions of partial shading.

But what makes the ABC modules excel in thermal safety performance? Typically, hotspots arise when partial shading, micro-cracks, or other internal defects disrupt the normal current flow within a photovoltaic module. If a segment of a cell becomes shaded, its current generating capacity diminishes, leading to localized heating as energy dissipates in the form of heat. Persistent localized heating can result in rapid temperature escalation, exacerbating material degradation and creating fire hazards.

Two Key Design Advantages

AIKO addresses these critical risks via two pivotal design advantages:

1. Cell-Level Bypass Diode Function: Each AIKO ABC cell is outfitted with a unique bypass diode functionality that enhances current flow during partial shading conditions. This configuration allows for alternative current pathways, redistributing current around the affected area and preventing electrical stress and power dissipation from accumulating in one location. Consequently, this design helps to inhibit excessive temperature rises and enhances thermal safety under shaded conditions.

2. Copper Interconnection Technology: AIKO's copper interconnection technology significantly lowers the risk of hotspots related to micro-cracks. Unlike conventional silver paste metallization, which often incorporates glass granules, AIKO's design utilizes pure copper grids adhered to the silicon wafer. This robust copper structure markedly augments the cell's mechanical strength and resistance to micro-cracking, thereby reducing the potential for hotspot formation.

Fire Resistance – A Critical Factor

Moreover, fire safety in photovoltaic systems must encompass defenses against external fire sources. In IEC fire resistance tests, which expose modules to flames of 760°C for 10 minutes, AIKO's dual-glass ABC modules achieved the highest fire resistance class (Class A), whereas traditional modules received a Class C rating. This stark difference in flame resistance underscores the need for enhanced safety measures within solar technology.

A Sustainable Future with AIKO

As Europe accelerates its transition to renewable energy, mere efficiency is insufficient; the emphasis must also lie on thermal safety, fire resistance, and long-term reliability. The evolving landscape demands that next-generation photovoltaic technologies embody high performance alongside robust safety frameworks. In this context, AIKO’s ABC technology represents a substantial advancement toward secure solar solutions that not only perform optimally but also foster a resilient and sustainable energy future.

With these innovative strides in photovoltaic safety, AIKO not only enhances the reliability of solar technology but also instills confidence in the continuous push towards a greener Europe.
