Celebrating the Power of Short Films: SSFF & ASIA Honors New Talent in Tokyo

SSFF & ASIA: A Celebration of Short Film Excellence in Tokyo

On May 15, Tetsuya Bessho, the representative of the Short Short Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), paid a courtesy visit to Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the international section and the 22nd year of co-hosting the Asia-Japan division, both integral parts of this renowned short film festival.

The festival theme, “creative active generative,” resonated through a speech by Governor Koike, who emphasized the festival’s role in showcasing exceptional works created by talented directors and creators over the years. She expressed admiration for how the festival has enriched the lives of many through short films, fostering connections among people while bringing joy and inspiration.

The event highlighted the “Cinematic Tokyo” section, which aims to feature the diverse charm of Tokyo through short films. Governor Koike announced the outstanding works from 197 submissions received globally, with five finalists selected. The prestigious award, known as the Governor's Award, was conferred upon the film 'GAIJIN,' directed by Michele Motzo, an Italian filmmaker. This piece artfully weaves together seven brief stories, reflecting the experiences of foreigners in Tokyo. Bessho shared insights into the film’s nature, praising how it captures the beauty of Tokyo from unique perspectives and generates anticipation for subsequent scenes.

In her remarks, Governor Koike highlighted the significance of the “Cinematic Tokyo” section, stating, “The department has diligently showcased Tokyo's energy, history, and culture. We are grateful for the efforts of both domestic and international creators in promoting the allure of our city.”

The excitement continued with announcements surrounding the eighth film production project initiated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the festival. The third piece from the ongoing “Sustainable Recovery Project,” titled 'The City That Knows No Dawn,' was announced with a star-studded cast featuring Kanata Hosoda and Kai Inowaki, alongside cameo appearances by renowned actors such as Mana Konishi and Arata Iura. This story follows a protagonist leading a work-centric life, who discovers warmth and transformation while exploring the natural beauty of Okutama.

The trailer for 'The City That Knows No Dawn' was revealed during the visit, and Governor Koike commented, “The film beautifully represents the essence of our Sustainable Recovery Project. I am thrilled that we can present the natural charm of Okutama through a natural narrative.” The film will be available on the festival's YouTube channel starting today, and 'GAIJIN' will run online from May 28 to June 11.

Bessho also noted the growing trend of utilizing AI in film production, revealing that out of 4,592 submitted works this year, 275 were created in collaboration with AI. “Rather than posing a threat, AI is a technology we’ve created. If we harness it correctly, it can become a valuable partner for creators, expanding the realm of expression and storytelling,” he stated, highlighting the exciting possibilities for future collaboration between humans and technology.

The ceremony for the award will take place on June 11, where the Governor’s Award for the 'Cinematic Tokyo' section will be bestowed upon 'GAIJIN.'

SSFF & ASIA has been a pivotal platform since its inception, aiming to introduce the world of short films to Japan, combining global talent and diverse narratives. Each year, the festival continues to support emerging creators, promising to keep the spirit of innovation and creativity alive in the film industry.
