New Global Standards Launched to Safeguard Teen Mental Health Online
On February 10, 2026, an important milestone was reached in the realm of digital safety for young people. On Safer Internet Day, The Mental Health Coalition (MHC), under the guidance of prominent fashion designer and activist Kenneth Cole, introduced the Safe Online Standards (S.O.S.), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at protecting the mental well-being of teens engaged with online content.
This new standards system is designed to evaluate how social media, gaming, and other digital platforms develop their products and safeguard their young users, specifically those aged between 13 and 19. Directly targeting the concerning trends of exposure to suicide and self-harm content, the S.O.S. initiative offers a framework that is both user-informed and expert-driven. Companies are invited to voluntarily submit documentation regarding their safety policies and product functionalities for evaluation by independent global experts, creating a transparent, color-coded rating system accessible to the public.
Kenneth Cole, Founder of the MHC, stated, "For years, we've worked to break the stigma that keeps people from talking openly about mental health. As more of our lives move online, that work must evolve. Safe Online Standards are not a solution in themselves, but the launch of an ongoing initiative—one that empowers the real stakeholders..."
The sectors engaged in this initiative include some of the most prominent names in tech, such as Discord, Google/YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, Roblox, and Twitch, all of whom are participating in the initiative to assess their online safety practices. This involvement by major players in the tech industry illustrates the growing recognition of the need for accountability in protecting youth mental health on digital platforms.
Advertiser Engagement and Industry Responsibility
The S.O.S. initiative acknowledges the influence of advertisers in shaping the behavior of these platforms. By providing a standardized evaluation system, brands can align their marketing strategies with values prioritizing youth mental health. Incorporating S.O.S. ratings into media planning enables advertisers to reinforce incentives for healthier online spaces.
The coalition emphasizes a focused approach on gaming platforms, given the significant time youth spend on them. Thriving in Games, alongside Roblox, voiced their support for the S.O.S. initiative, highlighting the need for robust safety measures.
Antigone Davis, Vice President at Meta, articulated the company's commitment, saying, "...These standards provide the public with a meaningful way to evaluate platform protections and hold companies accountable."
Other platforms like Snap, Inc. are also stepping up to undergo evaluations in 2026, illustrating a collective responsibility among tech firms to ensure their environments are safe for young users.
Bipartisan and Expert Support
The need for a standardized approach has garnered attention from lawmakers as well, with bipartisan support evident at the initiative's launch. Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, had previously called for urgent action concerning the mental health impacts of social media in 2023. Attendees from the political sphere deemed the S.O.S. initiative a crucial step toward addressing these challenges.
Experts from various mental health organizations have expressed similar sentiments. Harold Koplewicz, CEO of the Child Mind Institute, emphasized the importance of open communication in families utilizing social media.
David S. Bickham, PhD, from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital, remarked on how the S.O.S. initiative provides an indispensable tool for families to understand the risks and supports available online.
A Call to Action
Looking forward, the MHC is urging all technology companies to join the S.O.S. program to embed mental health considerations in their product designs. Supporting organizations like the Brand Safety Institute have also committed to backing the initiative, underlining the critical need for secure online environments, especially for youth.
The Safe Online Standards initiative symbolizes a collaborative effort to foster safer digital spaces for adolescents. Those interested in learning more about S.O.S. can visit
