Kiten. Receives U-35 Special Award at TECTURE AWARD 2025
In a remarkable achievement for urban revitalization, the project known as
Kiten. has been awarded the U-35 Special Prize at the prestigious
TECTURE AWARD 2025. This accolade highlights Kiten.'s innovative approach to transforming the outdoor spaces of office buildings in Nihonbashi Kabutocho, known for its historical significance as the birthplace of Japan’s banking and securities establishments.
Background of the Project
The project, led by
Heiwa Real Estate Co., Ltd., in collaboration with design firm
Park Corporation and its space design brand
parkERs, aimed to reimagine urban spaces that cater to a diverse range of individuals including workers, residents, travelers, and visitors in the area. The Nihonbashi Kabutocho district is rich in history, featuring iconic buildings such as the Nippon Shoken Kaikan and the former First National Bank branch, which contribute to its identity as a significant financial hub in Japan.
The Philosophy Behind Kiten.
Kiten. strives to create a welcoming environment that encourages comfort and creativity. The revitalization incorporated elements such as benches, side tables, high counters, and box seats designed to accommodate both solitary and social experiences. Kiten. aims to foster engagement amongst the community and catalyze connections, intended to act as a 'starting point' for new ideas and collaborations.
The design features an eye-catching
yellow color that symbolizes both the traditional financial district and fresh transformation, reflecting excitement and vibrancy. The name “Kiten.” embodies several meanings, including “starting point,” “shining point,” and “tree point,” serving as a multi-faceted space where various aspects intertwine.
Innovative Design Features
Kiten. emphasizes adaptable furniture, allowing for customizable seating arrangements to suit the number of users. For instance, movable benches can slide apart to create individual or group spaces depending on the crowd. The incorporation of a
bollard structure, designed to restrict vehicle access, doubles as a side table with removable tops, offering versatility for personal gatherings or casual hangouts.
At nighttime, the ambience shifts dramatically, as illuminated glass stones embedded in the landscape create a cohesive glowing line, enhancing the tranquility of the space and inviting visitors to enjoy the surroundings.
Connection to the Community
Kiten. serves not only as a public space but also promotes the surrounding community by providing maps to nearby shops and attractions, along with posters to announce upcoming events. The development also thoughtfully integrates the landscapes of the adjacent Nihonbashi buildings, fostering more interaction between these communal areas and encouraging foot traffic within the district.
A Unique Landscape Design
The planting strategy implemented within Kiten. incorporates flora that resonates with the area’s financial legacy, utilizing plant species that symbolize prosperity and abundance. Varieties like yellow-flowering
Yamabuki and
Kinkan, which evoke images of treasure during winter, were carefully selected to align with the design’s seasonal aesthetics and the overarching theme of yellow.
The mulching materials used include wood chips sourced from local forests in Akita Prefecture, promoting sustainable practices while blending regional resources into urban development efforts. This initiative not only enhances the locality’s vibrancy but also supports forest preservation through a sustainable timber request cycle.
The Impact of Kiten.
As noted by
Yoshiko Akamatsu, CEO of
Calycanthus and Associates and an ambassador for the TECTURE AWARD, Kiten. embodies a shift away from the traditionally enclosed office environment towards inviting public spaces. It provides an atmosphere where individuals can unwind, creating a transformative impact on people’s awareness and behaviors in Nihonbashi.
Kiten. is an exemplary model of how urban spaces can invigorate communities, reflecting a progressive vision for overcoming conventional design limitations while enhancing the area’s historical context. As Heiwa Real Estate continues to innovate in urban landscape creation, Kiten. stands as a beacon for the revitalization efforts in Nihonbashi.
