Breakthrough T1D Launches Community Walks to Fund Type 1 Diabetes Research
Breakthrough T1D, which was previously known as JDRF, is championing an initiative this fall with the kickoff of its Breakthrough T1D Walks across the United States. This nationwide movement aims to unite the community in raising vital funds and awareness for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research—an autoimmune condition that significantly affects daily lives. The organization is committed to transforming the future for individuals impacted by T1D through grassroots efforts.
With the commitment to support research and advocacy, the Breakthrough T1D Walks are the largest gatherings for the T1D community globally and are designed to generate financial resources that power critical research and support initiatives. Through this collective effort, thousands of participants join together—families, teams, organizations, and sponsors—all rallying for a shared cause.
One of the driving forces behind the effectiveness of these walks is the sponsorship from esteemed partners such as Ford Motor Company and SanMar. These sponsors actively contribute to empowering local communities, ensuring the success of each event through their efforts in promoting registration and fundraising initiatives. Ford, in particular, has been a long-standing backer of the Walk, with Edsel B. Ford II leading a dedicated team for nearly three decades, having raised over $85 million for T1D research through initiatives stemming from the Ford Global Action Team.
"Breakthrough T1D is extremely thankful for Ford Motor Company’s unwavering support and leadership in our mission to transform the lives of those affected by T1D," stated Aaron J. Kowalski, Ph.D., CEO of Breakthrough T1D. The motivation and drive exhibited by the Ford Global Action Team exemplify the significant impact that can result from empowering employees to contribute to meaningful causes.
Edsel B. Ford II voiced pride in his company’s commitment to Breakthrough T1D, highlighting how it is an essential aspect of Ford's corporate culture to support causes that resonate with their values. "Together, we will work until we can eliminate type 1 diabetes entirely. Inspiring change is not just an aspiration but a commitment we hold dear as stewards of Ford’s legacy," he remarked, quoting his great-grandfather, Henry Ford.
This fall, over 120 Breakthrough T1D Walks are set to take place across the country, unifying individuals and communities as they step forward to raise critical funding needed to accelerate the mission of Breakthrough T1D. The public is encouraged to participate in these walks, both in person and virtually, making it accessible for everyone to engage. About Breakthrough T1D
As a premier organization dedicated to T1D research and advocacy, Breakthrough T1D strives to enhance the daily lives of individuals managing type 1 diabetes while simultaneously working towards finding cures. This mission encompasses investing in groundbreaking research, advocating for policy changes that affect the T1D community, and educating individuals on how to navigate life with this condition.
Understanding Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the immune system's attack on insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, resulting in little to no insulin production. This condition leads to a lifelong dependency on insulin therapy and poses the risk of various complications affecting health. It challenges nearly 9 million people around the globe, with many being diagnosed in adulthood. Despite ongoing research, there is currently no known cure for T1D, making the pursuit of effective treatments crucial.
