DAIKEN Opens Innovative Acoustic Laboratory to Enhance Sound Environment Comfort

In a significant development for the building materials industry, DAIKEN Corporation has inaugurated its specialized acoustic laboratory, affectionately dubbed the "Sound Environment Laboratory" or "Oto Labo." This state-of-the-art facility is located within the premises of the Okayama Factory in Okayama City. On November 13, the company held an opening ceremony attended by approximately 40 guests, including the Mayor of Okayama City, Mr. Omori, and various officials from the prefectural office.

Configuration of the Laboratory


The "Oto Labo" is designed to measure the fundamental acoustic performance of architectural materials and structures. It includes several specialized rooms:
  • - Reverberation Room: This room is designed with concrete finishes to enhance sound resonance, making it ideal for studying reverberation characteristics.
  • - Anechoic Room: Encased in unique sound-absorbing materials, this room is optimized to minimize reflections and echoes, allowing for precise acoustic measurements.
  • - Box Test Room: This space facilitates the assessment of impact noise isolation performances in multi-story residential buildings.
  • - Wood Structure Experimental Room: Focusing on the increasingly popular Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), this room examines how wood materials can be utilized to enhance acoustic comfort in structures.

With high-performance experimentation and measurement equipment installed in each of these specialized rooms, the "Oto Labo" is equipped to conduct various sound-related tests and performance evaluations.

Investment and Infrastructure


DAIKEN has invested approximately 1.3 billion yen into the construction of this groundbreaking lab, which encompasses a total floor area of 926 square meters on a site spanning 1,170 square meters. The design and construction were handled by Naikai Architect Co., Ltd. and Japan Acoustic Engineering Co., Ltd., ensuring that the facility meets the highest industry standards.

Features of the Laboratory Rooms


Two reverberation rooms and an anechoic room are connected, allowing for concurrent testing of sound insulation performance by placing test samples on the wall separating the two rooms. Notably, the construction of a dedicated 1,000 square meter acoustic laboratory is a first in the building materials sector. Furthermore, the incorporation of CLT for building the sound measurement wood experimental room marks another industry-first achievement.
