New Partnership to Develop Large-Scale Energy Storage Facilities in Japan

Japanese Battery Company, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced a strategic partnership with Sun Village, located in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture. This collaboration focuses on the development of large-scale energy storage systems, specifically designed for grid support. The two companies plan to leverage their strengths to create a joint venture that aims to achieve a total output of 100 MW, equivalent to approximately 400 MWh of energy storage capacity, by the end of 2025. This initiative is part of their commitment to contributing to a stable energy supply in Japan.

The transition to a decarbonized society has necessitated the promotion of carbon neutrality and the expansion of renewable energy sources. In this context, maintaining "regulatory power" for stable energy supply has become a critical challenge. Japanese Battery Company is set to identify suitable locations for energy storage facilities, working closely with power companies to ensure that required arrangements are made. Following this, the selection and installation of battery solutions will be advanced, leading to the construction of reliable energy storage facilities.

To ensure safe and effective long-term operations, the company will implement regulatory inspections and operational monitoring, taking advantage of accumulated operational know-how for maintenance and management. Additionally, they intend to market their energy storage facilities as financial products, creating a more accessible entry point for broader participation in this industry. By 2025, they expect to launch 20 facilities and reach 80 by 2026.

Since its establishment in 2012, Sun Village has prioritized harmony with local communities while promoting the development and construction of safe, renewable energy facilities, particularly solar power plants across the Kanto region. Recently, they have taken a leading role in the development of non-FIT solar power plants. To further expand the use of renewable energy while ensuring stable energy grid operations, Sun Village is advancing the development and construction of energy storage facilities not only in the northern Kanto region but also across the country.

On May 7, 2025, a high-voltage energy storage facility with specifications of 2 MW/8 MWh, developed by Sun Village and operated by Japanese Battery Company, commenced commercial operations in Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture. This facility represents the first project resulting from the collaboration between the two companies.
