Tech4Nature Mexico Project Wins GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Jaguar Protection

Huawei's Tech4Nature Project Shines

Huawei recently achieved a significant milestone by receiving the prestigious GSMA Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM Award for its Tech4Nature Mexico initiative. This accolade was presented at the M360 LATAM 2026 event, highlighting the project's significant social impact in Latin America through innovative environmental protection efforts aimed at preserving the jaguar population in the Dzilam de Bravo Nature Reserve in Yucatan, Mexico.

The Tech4Nature initiative, launched in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Huawei’s TECH4ALL program, employs state-of-the-art technological solutions to monitor and conserve the jaguar's natural habitat. By utilizing AI-driven tools, the project aims to gather critical data regarding the behavior and movements of these iconic and endangered felines.

Samira Herrera, Huawei Mexico's director of communications and public relations, emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating, "This award reflects the power of technology when applied for the benefit of humanity and the planet. Tech4Nature Mexico exemplifies how cross-sector collaboration can yield measurable positive outcomes for communities and biodiversity conservation."

Initiated in 2022, the project is currently in its second phase, involving a collaborative effort among various stakeholders including IUCN, Huawei, the Yucatan government, C Minds, the Polytechnic University of Yucatan, and the local community of Dzilam de Bravo. The project combines species detection and individual identification technologies with community-driven monitoring and management efforts. It also showcases collaboration across public administration, academic institutions, social organizations, and the private sector.

Regina Cervera, project coordinator for Tech4Nature Mexico at C Minds' AI for Climate program, added, "Tech4Nature Mexico demonstrates that the true potential of technology lies in transforming data into coordinated actions, joint initiatives, and public policies aimed at nature conservation. Through multisectoral collaboration focused on communities and human rights, the initiative empowers communities with tools such as artificial intelligence to support ecosystems that sustain our economies and future."

To date, the project has implemented 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices within the reserve, successfully identifying over 147 species, including 40 that are endangered. Notably, the system has documented 16 jaguars, providing crucial insights into their behaviors and movements, which will inform conservation strategies crucial for maintaining ecological balance within the reserve.

Huawei's cloud solutions are integral to processing and analyzing the collected field data. Alongside video recordings of jaguars, the system has analyzed over 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings, thereby enhancing the monitoring of local wildlife and their habitats. The insights gleaned from data enable more informed decision-making on biodiversity conservation policies. Additionally, the conservation area has expanded from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares, showcasing the project's positive landscape-level impacts.

Technologies such as AI, cloud data storage, and data analytics have allowed the Tech4Nature Mexico project to create a sustainable scientific model for nature conservation that integrates scientific innovation with community participation. In addition to these technologies, Huawei’s wireless connectivity solutions play a critical role in the transmission of environmental data in Tech4Nature projects—a topic that resonated during the M360 LATAM 2026 event.

This event, held on May 13 and 14, brought together regional and global leaders from the technology ecosystem, mobile networks, public administration, and digitally connected industries to discuss how to harness the power of technology for a better future for all. The GLOMO LATAM Awards celebrate change-makers who are redefining technology, connectivity, and social progress in the region. The recognition for Tech4Nature Mexico serves as a testament to its innovative approach and capacity to generate significant social and environmental benefits for Latin America.

Through Tech4Nature Mexico, Huawei reaffirms its commitment to leveraging technology as a tool for building a more sustainable and inclusive future by implementing projects that support environmental conservation and community development.
