XD THERMAL Expands Its Industrial Cooling Solutions for Cylindrical Cell Packs
XD THERMAL Enhances Industrial Cooling Capabilities
XD Thermal Technology, a leading Chinese manufacturer of thermal management systems, has made significant strides in its side-cooling solutions designed for cylindrical battery packs. This advancement addresses critical challenges faced during rapid charging and discharging processes, where heat buildup can compromise battery performance.
The Challenge of Heat Accumulation
Cylindrical battery packs are increasingly used in electric vehicles and other high-performance applications, where efficiency is paramount. The main issue with these battery packs is the heat accumulation during high current loads. XD THERMAL's innovative solution involves the implementation of a side liquid cooling design that utilizes serpentine tubes. These tubes are strategically placed along the sidewall of each cell, effectively enhancing the contact area compared to traditional cooling plates positioned at the bottom.
By increasing the effective heat exchange surface area, the new design significantly minimizes temperature gradients along the vertical axis of the cells (Z-axis). This much better temperature regulation allows each individual cell to maintain a more stable temperature range, which is critical for prolonging the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries.
Robust Design and Quality Assurance
XD THERMAL's new platform for lateral cooling modules and packs is characterized by robust construction and reliable quality control methods. The cooling tubes are flexible enough to accommodate various arrangements of cylindrical cells, allowing for efficient integration with different collectors, supports, and piping configurations. The company has verified flow path designs and internal design standards that ensure predictable heat transfer performance from prototype to mass production.
Guo, a technical engineer at XD THERMAL, shared insights about the platform design approach stating, “This design significantly reduces costs and development time while facilitating agile development for our clients.” The introduction of proven solutions for piping connections, electrical insulation, and geometric combinations has assisted numerous clients in successfully completing their lateral cooling battery developments.
High-Volume Production Capability
In 2024, XD THERMAL launched high-volume production lines for serpentine tubes, achieving a daily capacity of 30,000 units. This production line integrates forming, welding, cleaning, and automated leak testing processes, all crucial for manufacturers aiming to scale efficiently. Sun, the Director of Manufacturing Engineering at XD THERMAL, emphasizes the importance of “start-up and industrialization being as vital as product development.” The company offers a repeatable and scalable production system with a confirmed development roadmap and standardized operating procedures (SOPs), enabling a quick turnaround for production ramp-up and line expansion. Typically, the preparation of production lines and tools can be completed within 6 to 8 weeks before the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).
Recognition and Future Prospects
XD THERMAL's ability to industrialize and deliver advanced thermal management solutions has earned recognition from system-level clients as well. In November 2025, OP Mobility, a top-tier global automotive supplier, officially nominated XD THERMAL as a thermal management component supplier in its supply chain.
As cylindrical C2P packs rapidly gain traction in electric vehicle batteries and other high-demand applications, XD THERMAL anticipates a growing need for advanced lateral cooling solutions. Suppliers with expansive capacity, highly automated production lines, and established design platforms are well-positioned to meet this increasing demand. The future looks bright for XD THERMAL as it leads the way in the thermal management industry, helping to ensure the efficiency and longevity of next-generation battery technologies.
