ABB Unveils Terra 184 JN: A Dual-Compatible Fast Charger for EVs

ABB Introduces the New Terra 184 JN Fast Charger

ABB is at the forefront of electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions with the launch of its latest model, the Terra 184 JN. This innovative fast charger uniquely supports both CHAdeMO and NACS (North American Charging Standard) standards, catering to the diverse needs of EV users in Japan.

With increasing electric vehicle adoption, the need for versatile charging solutions has never been greater. The Terra 184 JN stands out by allowing charging of individual vehicles with up to 150 kW via CHAdeMO and up to 180 kW with NACS. Furthermore, it can deliver simultaneous charging for two vehicles, each receiving up to 90 kW, making it a highly efficient choice for busy public charging stations.

Manufactured at ABB's state-of-the-art facility in Vardarno, the Terra 184 JN is set to enter the market with orders beginning in 2025 and deliveries expected in 2026. This model enhances the already popular Terra 184 line, which has established a strong reputation as a best-selling fast charger.

In addition to the new model, existing users of the Terra 184 JJ (CHAdeMO + CHAdeMO version) will benefit from the upcoming NACS Upgrade Kit. This kit allows current users to retrofit their chargers to support the NACS standard, with order acceptance also beginning in 2025. This flexibility means that businesses and consumers already invested in ABB’s infrastructure can easily transition to accommodate newer vehicle technologies.

ABB's commitment to providing charging solutions spans across 109 countries, ensuring that regional specifications are met and accessibility is prioritized. The NACS has been adopted in North America since 2023, and Japan is the first country in the Asia Pacific region to embrace this standard.

Yukiro Kataoka, head of ABB's E-mobility division, highlights the advantages of the Terra 184 JN, stating, "By accommodating both CHAdeMO and NACS standards, this charger offers a significant benefit by allowing any EV operating on Japanese roads to charge using a single unit. This new charging solution enhances flexibility for EV manufacturers and dealers introducing NACS-compliant vehicles, enabling them to meet the varied needs of users. The Terra 184 JN marks a vital step towards anticipating the growing market for NACS-compatible vehicles. Drawing on our experience from the North American market, we aim to contribute to the development of a sustainable charging infrastructure in Japan."

The Terra 184 JN exemplifies ABB’s dedication to fostering a sustainable future through electrification and automation. The company’s expertise in engineering and digital technology enables organizations to enhance performance, efficiency, productivity, and sustainability, reinforcing the notion of being "Engineered to Outrun."

With a legacy that spans over 140 years and a workforce of more than 110,000 employees globally, ABB continues to set the standard in electricity and automation technology. The company is publicly traded on the Swiss Stock Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm (ABB). More information can be found at www.abb.com.
