Tokyo Arts Council Seeks Artists for Creative Spaces START Box in Shibuya and Odaiba

Discover the START Box: A Unique Opportunity for Artists in Tokyo

The Tokyo Arts Council, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Historical and Cultural Foundation, is launching an exciting initiative aimed at supporting emerging artists. They are inviting artists to apply for creative spaces called "START Box" located in Shibuya and Odaiba, which will be available starting in October 2025. This program is designed to provide essential studio space for young creators, facilitating their artistic activities in an accessible and affordable manner.

The Call for Artists

The two START Box locations are:
1. START Box Sasahata-Hatsu in Shibuya (near Sasazuka and Hatagaya stations)
2. START Box Odaiba

Both facilities are easily accessible via public transport, making them ideal for artists seeking communal environments to flourish creatively. These spaces not only serve as studios but also offer avenues for showcasing artworks and participating in community events.

Application Process

The application window is open from July 3, 2025, at 2 PM until noon on July 28, 2025. Interested individuals must meet the following criteria to apply:
  • - Be actively engaged in visual arts, including painting, photography, and media arts (excluding theater and dance).
  • - Be at least 18 and not more than 40 years old at the time of application.
  • - Reside, work, or have graduated from a school in Tokyo.
  • - Be willing to actively participate in community outreach initiatives.

The selection process involves evaluating submitted documents, and all applicants will receive notification of the results by the end of August 2025.

Why START Box?

The "START Box" initiative was conceived to offer young artists a much-needed platform as securing studio spaces can be particularly challenging. The first START Box opened its doors in April 2023 along the Suido Road using vacant commercial spaces in public housing. Following its success, the Odaiba location is set to launch in November 2023, with past participants showcasing their work in international exhibitions and competitions.

This program serves as a testament to Tokyo's commitment to fostering artistic talent and promoting cultural exchange within the community. If you are an artist seeking space to create and connect, the START Box could be your next destination. For more detailed information, applicants can visit the official START Box website or review the recent press release.

Embrace this opportunity to immerse yourself in a vibrant community and make your artistic aspirations come to life at START Box! Don't forget; the application deadline is fast approaching. Come join a network of progressive artists devoted to enhancing the cultural landscape of Tokyo.
