Join the Adventure: SSTR2026
The anticipation is building for one of Japan's largest motorcycle events, the
SSTR2026 (Sunrise Sunset Touring Rally 2026), organized by the SSTR Executive Committee, which is based in Shibuya, Tokyo. Starting on
February 22, 2026, at 6:38 AM, registration will open for the event that promises to accommodate
14,000 motorcyclists, the largest number to date.
Expanding Opportunities for Riders
In response to the growing popularity of the event, the committee has significantly increased the capacity for participants. More importantly, to ease weekend congestion and invigorate local economies, the number of weekday slots has been enhanced. With the introduction of a
“Weekday Designated Day System,” riders can now choose their departure day according to their personal schedule, allowing for greater convenience and accessibility.
What is SSTR?
The SSTR, which stands for
Sunrise Sunset Touring Rally, was envisioned by motorcycle adventurer
Kazama Fukashi. First launched in 2013 with just 130 participants, this event has evolved into more than just a race; it celebrates the themes of adventure and travel among riders. Unlike traditional racing events, SSTR is characterized by its unique format. Riders set off at sunrise from the eastern coastline of Japan, navigating to several designated stop points using an original GPS system, accumulating points throughout the day. The thrill culminates as participants aim to reach
Chirihama Nagisa Driveway in Ishikawa Prefecture by sunset.
In this event, participants gain the freedom to determine their date of participation, starting point, and route to the finish line. Rather than simply competing for speed, the focus lies on each motorcyclist striving toward their personal goals. This individualized approach is a key allure of SSTR, with local communities, organizations, and businesses actively supporting these challenges.
SSTR Rules
The core rule of the event is straightforward:
- - Start at sunrise from any designated coast, and reach Chirihama before sunset.
- - Participants can begin their journey from any coast across Japan, as long as they start after sunrise.
- - Along the route, competitors must visit specific roadside rest areas or expressway service areas to collect designated points.
- - To successfully complete the challenge, riders must accumulate at least 15 points from these stops.
- - Finally, they must arrive at Chirihama Nagisa Driveway in Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture, before dusk.
