Valvoline Innovates with New GF-7 Motor Oil Standards for Enhanced Performance
Engineering the Future of Motor Oil
In a groundbreaking move for the automotive industry, Valvoline™ Global Operations has unveiled its new line of motor oils designed to exceed the rigorous GF-7 specifications set by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC). This innovative launch, which began on March 31, 2025, reinforces Valvoline's pivotal role in the evolution of motor oil standards, marking over 150 years of expertise in automotive solutions.
The new passenger car motor oils are now available for consumers in the U.S. and Canada, providing unparalleled engine protection and performance. Valvoline’s commitment to quality ensures that their formulations not only meet but surpass the expectations set by the latest industry standards. The current range of synthetic motor oils certified under ILSAC GF-6 already fulfills all requirements of the new GF-7 regulations, affirming Valvoline’s mission to be at the forefront of innovation in engine oil technology.
Valvoline stands out as the sole significant lubricant producer with an advanced engine lab dedicated to shaping ILSAC standards. Located in Ashland, Kentucky, this facility enables Valvoline to conduct critical engine sequence tests every five to seven years, defining the performance benchmarks for the industry. With such capabilities, Valvoline ensures that their oils are not only compliant but also future-proof, catering to the evolving needs of both manufacturers and consumers.
Dr. Michael Warholic, Senior Global Technology Director at Valvoline, emphasizes the need for enhanced vehicle performance in today's fast-paced world. He states, ‘Our engines are required to perform more vigorously as life accelerates, and our innovative oils are designed to help maintain optimal engine performance and longevity.’ This reflects Valvoline's understanding of modern automotive demands, where maintaining engine health is paramount to ensuring vehicle reliability and performance.
Valvoline's ILSAC GF-7 compliant motor oils address four primary causes of engine breakdown: wear, friction, heat, and deposits. These oils provide a level of protection that exceeds the basic standards necessary for the performance requirements of modern engines. Noteworthy is the durability demonstrated by Valvoline's GF-7 full synthetic technology, which was tested over 500,000 miles in one engine without the need for any critical component replacement, significantly reducing sludge and deposits compared to conventional GF-6 oils.
The GF-7 standard introduces a dual designation system: GF-7A, applicable for all SAE 0W-20 viscosity grades and heavier, and GF-7B, tailored for SAE 0W-16 viscosity oils. GF-7A is backward compatible with previous standards such as GF-6A and GF-5, while GF-7B is specifically compatible with GF-6B. As GF-6 designated motor oils are phased out, new Valvoline products will proudly bear the
