CAPDL Scholarship Fund Donation Boosts BridgeUSA Program Access for All
A $25,000 Boost for BridgeUSA Programs
The Coalition for American Public Diplomacy and Leadership (CAPDL) recently received a significant financial boost with a generous donation of $25,000 from the American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS). This funding is earmarked for the CAPDL Scholarship Fund, an initiative poised to broaden access to the BridgeUSA programs that enhance American economic prosperity, national security, and public diplomacy.
Since its inception in 1961, BridgeUSA has been a hallmark of international exchange facilitated by the U.S. Department of State. This program encompasses 13 Private Sector J-1 Visa Programs, which have allowed over 4.4 million participants worldwide to experience life in the United States through short-term exchange programs. These experiences not only serve to enrich the lives of the participants but also significantly contribute to the U.S. economy, generating approximately $1.7 billion annually at no cost to taxpayers.
The establishment of the CAPDL Scholarship Fund for BridgeUSA is set to launch in 2026 and aims to award scholarships to deserving individuals interested in participating in any of the 13 BridgeUSA programs affiliated with CAPDL. Crucially, the fund will prioritize applicants who might struggle to afford the costs associated with these invaluable cultural exchanges. Carye Duffin, CAPDL Board Chair, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards Bill Gertz and AIFS for their commitment to supporting future leaders through this scholarship initiative. “In a time marked by rising costs and deepening divides, the kind of meaningful, person-to-person engagement fostered by BridgeUSA is not just valuable — it’s essential,” Duffin articulated, highlighting the transformative potential of this funding for young leaders across the globe.
Moreover, Gertz, Chairman of AIFS, emphasized the importance of providing the necessary resources to motivated students and young adults. “In these challenging times, program advocacy, sharing best practices, and storytelling are key components in our public diplomacy and cultural exchange initiative. However, providing funds for motivated students and young adults to come to America is our top priority,” he stated.
As we look ahead, community involvement in promoting these exchange programs is crucial. If individuals are interested in fostering global understanding of American culture and values, they are encouraged to contribute to the CAPDL Scholarship Fund. Interested parties can reach out directly to CAPDL's Executive Director, Carmen Mezzera, to explore avenues for support.
