MOLDINO Expands EMSBHE-ATH Drill Sizes for Precision Machining
On March 23, 2026, MOLDINO, a company based in Sumida, Tokyo, will launch additional sizes for their advanced
Epoch Micro Step Borer H Evolution EMSBHE-ATH drill specifically designed for high hardness steel. This drill has been developed to address the increasing demand for precision in machining applications, particularly with hard steel materials.
Development Background
One of the effective strategies for reducing the manufacturing costs of molds involves the precision cutting of heat-treated steel, known as
hard steel, through direct drilling methods. Among these methods, creating deep holes with small diameters presents significant challenges, causing most mold manufacturers to rely on fine hole discharge machining, which has its limitations. While this method can produce high-aspect-ratio small-diameter holes, it often suffers from quality inconsistencies due to secondary discharges. Moreover, the lifespan of the pipe electrodes used in this process is short, necessitating frequent replacements, requiring operators to consistently monitor the machinery.
To counter these challenges, MOLDINO aimed at achieving direct drilling for small-diameter deep holes in hard steel, resulting in the innovative design of the
Epoch Micro Step Borer H Evolution EMSBHE-ATH. Users who have adopted this drill have reported improvements in machining quality and significant reductions in labor needs. However, demands were raised for greater stability when working with 60HRC grade hardened steel and the ability to accommodate various pinhole sizes in mold components.
In response, MOLDINO developed a refined version of their existing product, leading to the introduction of the
EMSBHE-ATH drill that enhances stability and expands size options for specific applications, launching it in May 2025. Recently, the company has added a new
118-size option compatible with gauge pin holes used in syringe needle molds, expanding the operational capabilities of the drill.
Product Features and Advantages
- - Designed specifically for micro stepped machining, enabling high precision in deep hole drilling for hard steel.
- - Unique chip evacuation technology and blade shape allow for drilling small diameter deep holes with an L/D ratio of 30.
- - Compared to fine hole discharge machining, this drill improves burr control, hole precision, and surface finish overall.
- - The shift towards cutting machining for various mold pin holes facilitates major reductions in labor and supports unmanned operation models.
- - Optimization of surface treatment leads to enhanced stability when machining high hardness steel (60HRC class).
- - A significantly expanded line-up of tool diameters facilitates better choices for subsequent processing by adjusting tolerances according to wire discharge and reamer needs.
Recommended Applications
The EMSBHE-ATH drill is particularly recommended for applications related to precise deep hole machining in hard steel, including various pin hole operations in molds, such as those used for syringe needles.
