MUJI House Launches Second Phase of Urban Living Project in Japan

MUJI House's Exciting Second Phase of Urban Living Project

MUJI House, based in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, has officially launched the second stage of its innovative project titled “I Like Living in the City, Even Though the Countryside is Nice.” This initiative is aimed specifically at those who desire a vibrant city lifestyle through the medium of apartment renovations. This new phase follows a successful first stage that ran from November 2022 to October 2023, where we embraced the theme of “Compact yet Rich Living” and engaged over 15,000 participants. The valuable insights and ideas collected were directly applied to actual living spaces.

In this second phase, the core theme has shifted to “Making Everyday Life a Little More Special at Home.” Through comprehensive surveys, MUJI House aims to gather thoughts and concepts that will meaningful enhance urban living. The feedback collected will be reflected in the model room set to open in Ginza this summer.

Purpose of the Initiative

As the market for new apartments continues to soar and living habits evolve, renovations of old apartments stand out as a practical option for those who want to enjoy an authentic lifestyle in the city. MUJI House invites urban dwellers to contribute their ideas about their ideal residences via an online platform, ensuring they have a voice in shaping their living spaces. The focus this time is on how to make everyday life feel a little more special, using articles and surveys as communication tools. All gathered suggestions will directly influence the new model room in Ginza.

Detailed Overview

The team of architects behind MUJI’s renovations will utilize the surveys to model several fictional clients, each embodying unique lifestyle choices. They will explore housing plans that resonate with these imagined residents, subsequently offering proposals for review via surveys to gauge public sentiment. The survey series is planned to unfold over three rounds, with themes that include:

1. “Living in Harmony with Nature” (Results available by May 30, 2025)
2. “An Ideal Home Adorned with Select Art” (Expected results by June 20, 2025)
3. “An Ideal Residence with Favorite Furniture” (Expected results by July 11, 2025)
