Innovative Partnership Shapes Future of Microgrid Energy Solutions

Strategic Partnership to Address Energy Resilience

In an ambitious move set to reshape energy solutions for commercial buildings, BSD Builders, Inc. has teamed up with Hydria Gas Technologies, LLC. This newly formed partnership aims to develop a groundbreaking fuel storage system and decompression mechanism designed specifically for microgrid applications. This collaboration comes in response to the increasing need for reliable energy sources, especially in regions subject to unpredictable weather events, like California.

Addressing a Pressing Need in Healthcare Facilities

The genesis of this partnership lies in the struggles faced by skilled nursing facilities during the devastating California wildfires. With utility companies initiating Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in response to hazardous weather, many facilities were left scrambling to evacuate their patients. This crisis highlighted a significant gap in the energy solutions available, especially for those in the healthcare sector where continuous power is critical.

Jeff Blair, CEO of BSD Builders, articulated the challenge, stating, "Before Governor Gavin Newsom's legislation in 2022, which mandated skilled nursing facilities have at least 96 hours of backup power, our clients were actively seeking solutions. Unfortunately, no existing systems could handle their energy loads while also complying with California’s stringent seismic safety standards."

In response, BSD Builders collaborated with 2G Energy Inc. to design the BSD SSC Microgrid system capable of delivering power for up to four days. However, a robust fuel storage solution was equally essential, which is where Hydria's expertise came in.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Energy Storage

Hydria Gas Technologies is recognized for manufacturing the largest diameter Type IV composite high-pressure vessels in the industry. The newly introduced BSD SSC Microgrid Fuel Storage System is touted to be the largest of its kind, leveraging advanced technology to meet growing energy demands. Manufactured in Houston, Texas, this new storage system includes a unique decompression technology that allows compressed natural gas (CNG) to step down from 3600 psi to 5 psi for optimized microgrid integration.

Alberto Chiesara, President of Hydria Gas Technologies, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We are excited to partner with BSD Builders to engineer a system that supports microgrid technology and ensures power remains available for those who need it most. With our innovative gas storage solutions, we aim to enhance energy security while contributing to a sustainable future."

A Unique Approach to Fuel Storage

The design of the Type IV storage cylinders employed in the BSD SSC Fuel Storage System represents a significant advancement over traditional models. Utilizing advanced roto-molded plastic liners, these cylinders offer seamless and corrosion-resistant barriers, ensuring optimal gas purity. The carbon fiber overwrap contributes to a lightweight, durable structure, enhancing not only storage capacity but also resilience against environmental challenges and fatigue.

In addition to accommodating CNG, these cylinders are hydrogen-ready, a significant point as the industry leans toward alternative fuels. Designed to fit vertically for space efficiency, the storage system aligns with the needs of many commercial settings where space is constrained.

Paving the Way for the Future

The BSD SSC Microgrid solution isn’t solely focused on healthcare facilities; it can serve any building requiring a reliable power source during outages. With a design engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds and seismic certification, the system stands ready to meet a diverse range of energy requirements.

As the first projects emerge from this collaboration in California, both companies remain committed to expanding their reach to additional markets, emphasizing their shared vision for a sustainable energy future. This partnership marks a vital step toward enhancing energy resilience through innovative technology, serving the vital needs of communities while tackling the challenges of climate change.
