Amazon Teamsters Achieve Landmark Union Recognition from NLRB in Major Victory

Amazon Teamsters Make History with NLRB Ruling

In an unprecedented decision, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled in favor of the Amazon Labor Union representing Teamsters, marking a significant milestone in labor history. The ruling confirms that Amazon illegally refused to acknowledge the Staten Island-based union and has mandated the company to begin negotiations. This ruling, which comes on the four-year anniversary of the Teamsters' successful election at the JFK8 facility, is being hailed as a major victory for worker rights and collective bargaining.

Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien celebrated the ruling, emphasizing its importance for Amazon workers across the country.

"This fight is far from over, but this ruling from the NLRB is a historic victory for Amazon Teamsters nationwide and a testament to worker power,” O'Brien stated.

The JFK8 warehouse workers initially formed their union on April 1, 2022. After affiliating with the Teamsters Union in June 2024, they became ALU-IBT Local 1, and now they stand firm with nearly 5,500 members who have faced significant challenges from Amazon in their fight for recognition and rights. Over the last four years, the NLRB has repeatedly identified instances where Amazon has disregarded the union’s legitimacy while attempting to pressure workers to abandon their organizing efforts. This relentless struggle culminated in the NLRB ruling, which confirms that Amazon's tactics were illegal and unjustifiable under labor laws.

Randy Korgan, Director of the Teamsters Amazon Division, remarked that Amazon’s strategy of delaying and evading responsibility has been ineffective in the face of organized labor.

“Amazon Teamsters know that this company will try to do anything it can to escape its responsibilities,” Korgan explained. “We will continue to build worker power and hold Amazon accountable wherever it violates the law.”

In addition to recognizing the union, Amazon is required to publicly display the NLRB's ruling at the JFK8 facility, informing employees of their rights to unionize. This measure is critical as it empowers workers to understand their rights and seek collective representation without fear of repercussions.

Connor Spence, President of ALU-IBT Local 1, declared,
"We are making history at Amazon, and we are doing it through undiluted worker power. Amazon has used every resource to try and break us but continues to fail. Collective action is stronger than their aggressive tactics."

The NLRB's ruling not only marks a victory for the Teamsters and Amazon workers but also sets a precedent affecting labor movements nationwide. With a united front, the Teamsters are now prepared to tackle future challenges as they fight for better working conditions, fair wages, and the rights of workers everywhere. The announcement of this ruling followed closely behind another victory protecting the Teamsters’ right to strike, showcasing a revitalized commitment to labor rights amid changing economic landscapes.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents over 1.3 million workers across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, reinforcing the power of collective action in the workforce. The ruling resonates well beyond Amazon and signals a growing strength among labor unions, aiming to advocate for workers’ rights against corporate disobedience.
