Elementary School Students in Saku City Launch a Crowdfunding Project to Preserve Local History

Supporting Community through Education and Action

In the heart of Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, a heartfelt initiative is unfolding as sixth graders from Hirane Elementary School embark on a project aimed at preserving their community's history and culture. This initiative, named the 'Future-Connecting Cherry Blossom Project,' seeks financial support through a crowdfunding campaign called 'GIVING for FUTURE,' which will run from June 1 to July 31, 2026, with a target goal of 1 million yen.

The inspiration for this project stems from the beloved cherry trees that once graced the school's courtyard. Unfortunately, one such tree, over 130 years old, was damaged and fell due to severe weather conditions. Recognizing the significance of these trees to local residents, the students have decided to honor the memory of the fallen cherry tree by transforming it into lasting products that the community can cherish.

Not just focused on fundraising, this project embodies a comprehensive learning experience for the students. In April 2026, prior to launching the campaign, Sony Bank provided financial education classes at Hirane Elementary, teaching students about the roles of money—including earning, saving, and donating. Through group discussions, students explored the sentimental value of the cherry trees and learned about the significance of crowdfunding for supporting local causes. This education empowers them to take tangible action to connect with their community and foster its development.

Sony Bank is fully supportive of this initiative, assisting with creating a special fundraising website, covering transaction fees, and ensuring that the funds raised will be utilized effectively for the children's activities. This comprehensive support allows the students to focus on their mission—creating products from the cherry tree wood that resonate with local residents and celebrate their rich history.

The students have expressed their eagerness to engage with the community, inviting residents to share memories of the cherry tree as they work together to create commemorative items. They believe that these efforts will strengthen their bonds with the community, ensuring that even as the tree's form changes, its spirit continues to watch over the school.

As the project unfolds, the Hirane Elementary sixth graders are keen on inviting the community to support their mission. They hope that through this initiative, they can not only preserve memories but also create new ones that will last for generations.

The monetary contributions collected will fund the cherry wood product creation, as well as the development of a new school sign, which will serve as a testament to the school’s commitment to sustainability and community spirit.

Community Involvement

Involving the community is essential to the project's success. As the school aims to deepen its connections with local residents, the project will provide ample opportunities for interaction, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. This process also encourages students to enhance their understanding and appreciation of their local environment.

In line with Sony Financial Group’s sustainability objectives, the project aligns with educational efforts aimed at providing financial literacy to all. The initiative also contributes to building vibrant community relations, encouraging the students to see firsthand the impact of their actions on their surroundings.

As students, educators, and community members come together, they engage in a shared journey of growth—learning valuable lessons about responsibility, charity, and the importance of nurturing local heritage. With collective efforts, the Future-Connecting Cherry Blossom Project aims to ensure a lasting legacy for the Hirane community, inspiring future generations to treasure their history and embrace their roots.

The journey of these sixth graders reflects a significant step toward instilling values of collaboration and community service, proving that even young voices can advocate for creating a brighter future for all.
