Syzygy Plasmonics Leads the Charge in Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production



In a pioneering move that could redefine the future of aviation fuel, Syzygy Plasmonics, a Houston-based innovator, has launched an ambitious project in Uruguay. This initiative aims to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from dairy waste and biogas, marking the introduction of a groundbreaking commercial project to the industry. The facility, known as the NovaSAF 1, aims to yield a significant 500,000 gallons of drop-in jet fuel annually, powered entirely by renewable energies and waste gases. No green hydrogen or complicated gasification methods are required, highlighting the project's sustainability and efficiency.

At the heart of this endeavor lies Syzygy's innovative light-driven greenhouse gas (GHG) e-Reforming technology. This technology excels at generating the desired syngas ratio essential for the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis process from biogenic methane and CO₂. This approach not only circumvents the need for water-heavy methods typically associated with steam reforming but also makes fuel production more cost-effective and straightforward.

To convert this syngas into high-quality jet fuel, Syzygy has partnered with Velocys, a leader in Fischer-Tropsch technology, renowned for its reliability and efficiency. With Velocys’s microFTL technology incorporated into the project, Syzygy aims to maximize the fuel output while significantly reducing the overall costs associated with synthetic fuel production.

Trevor Best, the CEO of Syzygy Plasmonics, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, "This project proves that profitable SAF production doesn't have to wait on future infrastructure. With Velocys, we're bringing in a complete, modular solution that drives down overall production costs and is ready to scale. Uruguay is only the start."
