Okayama University Showcases Science at the Okayama Prefectural Museum

On July 10, 2026, the Technical Division of Okayama University (headquartered in Okayama City, led by President Yasuto Nasu) participated in the 8th Annual Waku Waku Science Workshop at Kibe Plaza in Kibi Central Town. This marks their third participation in the event, which began in 2024, and this year they co-hosted the activity with the Light Creation Nexus. The event saw active involvement from Professor Nobuko Fukuda from the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences and her students.

Seventy-two elementary school students from four primary schools in the Kibi Central Town gathered at the venue for an engaging experience with science through accessible themes. The Technical Division offered seven interactive activities including, "Creating Bottle Kaleidoscopes", "Making Bath Salts", "Playing with Slime", "Making Chromat Art Bookmarks", "Creating Star Boxes", "Experimenting with Straws and Rubber Bands", and "Spinning Tops". From the Light Creation Nexus, participants also had the opportunity to craft mini stained glass using adhesive tape. The children eagerly sought out different booths, enthusiastic about maximizing their time to engage in as many scientific experiences as possible.

The Academic Research Coordinator of the Research and Innovation Collaborative Organization at Okayama University, Zixuan Peng, commented, "It was impressive to see the children’s eyes light up with curiosity as they enthusiastically crafted their projects. Through this experience, we hope they develop a tangible interest in science and recognize its enjoyable aspects. The Light Creation Nexus aims to continue collaborating with diverse partners to disseminate the joys of science throughout the community."

The Technical Division's efforts in community contribution and science education are carried out in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering, reaching audiences both inside and outside the university in various scenarios. They strive to conduct themes that allow the next generation to engage with science in a fun and accessible manner.
