New Philanthropic Commitments Boost Workforce Development in Western North Carolina
In a significant effort to uplift the workforce in Western North Carolina, $3.3 million in new philanthropic commitments have been announced for the Good Jobs Western North Carolina initiative. This regional program aims to place residents of 23 counties into good-paying jobs and improve the overall talent system in the area. Notably, this initiative has received the backing of major players like the Rockefeller Foundation, which is contributing $1 million over two years. This funding marks the first involvement of a national philanthropy in this locally-driven effort.
The investment also triggered a matching commitment of $2 million from the John M. Belk Endowment. Additionally, the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Foundation has joined as an in-state partner, adding substantial support with deep roots in apprenticeship and work-based learning.
Addressing Local Needs
The initiative is part of a larger regional response to economic challenges exacerbated by Hurricane Helene that hit the area two years ago. The disaster prompted communities to reevaluate their needs and how community colleges and local partners can play a pivotal role in creating a sustainable workforce.
The Good Jobs WNC initiative promises to surface barriers preventing residents from acquiring good jobs. Through the collaboration of employers, educators, and local government, the program intends to provide actionable insights that can inform policy changes and funding allocations.
On the occasion of announcing these commitments, MC Belk Pilon, President of the John M. Belk Endowment, and Jon Schnur, CEO of America Achieves, emphasized the importance of community involvement and leadership in reestablishing a robust local economy. Their comments were made during the Good Jobs WNC Summit, attended by hundreds of stakeholders seeking to improve job opportunities and workforce education across the region.
Commitment to Good Jobs for America
The funding from the Rockefeller Foundation aligns with its broader initiative titled Good Jobs for America, which launched in April 2026 with a commitment of $100 million. This initiative seeks to connect under-served communities with quality job opportunities, thus expanding economic growth while addressing the specific needs of distressed areas.
As part of the Good Jobs WNC initiative, $3.2 million will be awarded to 11 community colleges in the area to facilitate training programs, allowing for the placement of 1,200 individuals in job opportunities related to skilled trades, health care, and manufacturing. This funding is crucial for preparing residents to enter high-demand sectors, thus contributing to their economic viability and community resilience.
