Involving Youth: Workshop to Shape the Future of Japan's Scenic Roads

Shaping the Future: A Call for Universities in Japan

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in Japan has announced an exciting initiative aimed at engaging the younger generation in the development of the Japan Scenic Roads over the next ten years. The project seeks to visualize a framework that will make these scenic roads systems appealing and honorable for young people to engage with, utilize, and take pride in.

The Japan Scenic Roads initiative focuses on having local residents actively participate in preserving and utilizing regional landscapes and resources, ensuring their continuation for future generations. To support this vision, the Ministry has established the "Japan Scenic Roads Future Vision Co-Creation Council" which will explore developmental frameworks for the next decade. This year, workshops targeting university and graduate students will be held to rediscover the allure of scenic roads and propose future developments, leading to a call for participating universities.

Through these workshops, student proposals will be discussed within the council, and those with standout ideas will be integrated into policy-making. Participants will have the opportunity to involve themselves in practical policy formation, which might lead to the realization of their proposals in society. The workshops will aim to:
1. Visualize the appeal that attracts the next generation of participants and stakeholders.
2. Redesign communication, experience, and narratives to fit a modern media-savvy audience.
3. Present scenic roads in connection with future career, education, and lifestyle pathways.
4. Encourage the expression of constructive doubts and innovative ideas that may not emerge in conventional adult discussions.
