The Journey of Cultural Heritage: How the Complete Library Survived War in Guizhou

During the World Anti-Fascist War, a significant effort was made in China to protect cultural heritage, notably the Si Ku Quan Shu (Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature), a vast compendium of Chinese knowledge. This article explores the pivotal actions taken by cultural relics protection workers who, faced with the threat of war, undertook a remarkable journey to ensure the safety of this monumental classical collection.

The Historical Context

The Si Ku Quan Shu was not just an ordinary collection of books; it held the essence of Chinese literature, philosophy, and culture. As invaders sought to seize the Wenlan Pavilion copy during the war, cultural relics workers sprang into action by relocating the texts to protect them from imminent danger. This led to a long and arduous westward journey during which these invaluable books were hidden deep within Dimu Cave for approximately five years and eight months, away from the destruction left in the wake of the war. This act of preservation is a testament to the lengths taken to safeguard cultural history against destruction.

A Journey of Discovery

In more recent times, José Luis Fonseca Conejo and Gharibmamadova Sabzon became captivated by the wartime journeys of the Si Ku Quan Shu after hearing stories about its relocation alongside Zhejiang University into Guizhou province. Their curiosity prompted further exploration into how the mountainous region became a haven for cultural treasures during this turbulent period. Sabzon reached out to her friend in Guizhou, Gong Qingmin, to delve deeper into this remarkable segment of history.

Their exploration took them first to Luchongguan Pass Forest Park, where they met Zhu Jiang, the curator of Wenlan Hall in Guiyang. Zhu, the son of Zhong Haizhen, former director of the Guizhou Provincial Library, shared insights into the extraordinary journey that the Si Ku Quan Shu undertook. They learned how it traveled through provinces such as Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, and Hunan before finding temporary sanctuary in Guizhou during the chaos of war. After the conflict, the library gradually made its way back to Zhejiang, ensuring its survival for future generations.

Cultural Refuge in Wartime

Their next stop was Huaxi in Guiyang, where they uncovered stories of how Guizhou became a refuge for many writers and intellectuals during wartime, including the notable author Ba Jin. The serene landscape alongside the Huaxi River provided a peaceful backdrop for Ba Jin to compose his literary works, including 'Garden of Repose'. This narrative highlights how cultural perseverance and artistic expression flourished even amidst adversity.

A city walk through Guiyang further revealed the historical significance of Guizhou Radio Station located on Diantai Street, which played a crucial role in fostering communication and community during the war. Additionally, Gong Qingmin introduced the Zhuguang concerts, an organization aimed at uplifting the spirits of the Guizhou populace during such challenging times.

Remembering the Past to Inspire the Future

The journey concluded with an intimate music gathering near Wenchang Pavilion. As participants joined in a chorus of 'Auld Lang Syne', Sabzon expressed deep emotions regarding the importance of remembering history. She passionately stated, "We shall never forget history. Let's pay tribute to the brave souls who sacrificed everything and cherish the hard-won peace we have today. Together, let's build a better and more inclusive future." It is a reminder that even in the face of great challenge, cultural heritage holds the power to unite people and inspire resilience.

In summary, the preservation of the Si Ku Quan Shu during the World Anti-Fascist War not only reflects a commitment to safeguarding culture but also highlights Guizhou's unique role as a sanctuary for knowledge. By investigating these stories, we honor the past and recognize the significance of protecting our shared cultural heritage for generations to come.
