World Broadband Association Unveils Net5.5G Whitepaper

During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2025, the World Broadband Association (WBBA) hosted a significant industry summit themed "Smarter Broadband: Investment. Innovation. Intelligence." At this event, the WBBA announced the release of a new whitepaper aimed at enhancing the global deployment of Net5.5G. This document outlines best practices and strategies to expedite the introduction of this innovative technology, ultimately paving the way for what is referred to as the 'smart age' of connectivity.

The whitepaper demonstrates the growing consensus on the establishment of Net5.5G as the next-generation network infrastructure. Earlier in June 2024, the WBBA had published a foundational document detailing the Net5.5G architecture, which included a comprehensive plan defining not just the design but also the best practices and deployment guidelines necessary for transitioning to this new era of connectivity. This recent publication highlights advancements and emphasizes the widespread acceptance of Net5.5G across five continents, evidencing its recognition within the industry.

In addition to theoretical guidance, the whitepaper features 15 global use cases showcasing network operators, corporations, government entities, and industry leaders who have successfully implemented Net5.5G technologies. Each case provides insights into the contextual background, critical technologies, business advantages, and potential solutions that are integral for building next-generation networks.

For instance, in Europe, Swisscom has effectively leveraged Net5.5G to deliver high-quality, distinctive services to businesses, thereby offering customers more flexible and reliable service options. In the Middle East, Zain KSA, a service provider in Saudi Arabia, improved its connectivity by upgrading to 400GE, simplifying network connections. Meanwhile, Airtel in Nigeria has implemented Net5.5G to enhance network performance and reduce operational and maintenance costs, while Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison in the Asia-Pacific region adopted the technology to enhance digital service experiences and seize business opportunities.

To meet the emerging requirements of the intelligent age, four new scenarios have been defined within the whitepaper—computing connection, messaging connection, data connection, and aerial connection. Furthermore, it proposes four key technologies associated with Net5.5G, including ultra-broadband connectivity, enhanced IPv6 functionality, autonomous traffic networks, and integrated security measures. The utilization of AI routers at the network edge, AI reconnections at the networking level, and operation-level AI agents has resulted in sophisticated 10GE campus networks, high-capacity intelligent transport networks, and efficient data center networks.
