Policybazaar Broadens Reach in GIFT City to Attract NRI Investments

Policybazaar Expands Presence in GIFT City

In a progressive move towards reshaping financial accessibility for the Indian diaspora, Policybazaar has enhanced its operations within GIFT City, a pivotal hub for international finance in India. This strategic expansion is designed to cater specifically to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), enabling seamless access to investment opportunities that were previously challenging to navigate.

GIFT City: A New Financial Frontier

GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) stands out as India's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), aimed at attracting global finance and insurance businesses. This city is changing how NRIs engage with financial products, offering them the chance to invest in high-units denominated in US dollars along with linking insurance solutions. The allure of tax-free earnings under Section 10(10D) and the streamlined regulatory framework makes GIFT City an attractive option for NRIs across more than 35 countries.

Bimal Menon, Principal Officer of Policybazaar's GIFT City Branch, shares insights from a recent media briefing in Gujarat: “GIFT City now holds over 50% of our NRI customer base, rapidly becoming a favored destination for investments.” The tax advantages, ease of repatriation, and a cohesive regulatory environment enhance its appeal, particularly among younger investors aged 28 to 45, who seek growth in global dollar-denominated assets.

Investment Behavior Among NRIs

The demographic data reveals a concentration of NRI customers in the Gulf region, accounting for almost 50% of Policybazaar's clientele. Within this subset, countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Oman lead as key markets. Interestingly, the United States stands as the single largest market for these investments, with significant monthly contributions of around $10,000, outpacing contributions from UAE investors—who typically invest around $8,000 a month. This trend signals a robust investment appetite among NRIs eager to diversify their portfolios.

Lakshit Mahajan, Head of NRI Investment Business at Policybazaar, emphasized the transformative potential of GIFT City: “With the world-class infrastructure and tax advantages, we aim to simplify global investing for our NRI clients.” He noted that the city is a compelling alternative to established financial hubs like Singapore and Dubai, emphasizing features such as digital onboarding and varied payment options to ease the investment process.

A Fully Digital Investment Experience

Policybazaar is leveraging technology to ensure that the investment process is not just seamless but entirely digital—from onboarding to investment execution. NRIs can invest through their Non-Resident External (NRE) accounts with the ability to choose from various funds, including international options, Gold and Silver Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). The flexibility in how premiums are paid and the option for partial withdrawals add layers of convenience for investors. Moreover, the digital platform supports remote Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, eliminating the need for customers to be physically present.

Notably, certain policies offer valuable tax benefits, and the existence of Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) mitigate the risk of dual taxation. Policybazaar also provides options for premium waivers that secure ongoing investments against unexpected events, creating a safety net while also offering life coverage and USD-denominated payouts.

Reinsurers and Global Opportunities

The GIFT City regulatory landscape also empowers overseas insurers, facilitating a more flexible operational environment. Such provisions are expected to boost local underwriting capacity and risk pricing, ultimately enriching the insurance market in India. As international investments become easier to access, GIFT City is on track to significantly influence cross-border wealth generation for NRIs.

In conclusion, with a sound regulatory framework, tax benefits, and cutting-edge digital facilities, Policybazaar is set to empower NRI investors with innovative solutions that promise global diversification and long-term financial stability. GIFT City is not just a financial hub—it's a future-ready ecosystem where opportunities for wealth generation are limited only by one's ambition.
