High-Res Unveils Gunkai Town Data Center in Revival of Abandoned School

High-Res Unveils Gunkai Town Data Center

High-Res Inc., based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has officially opened the Gunkai Town Data Center, a facility adapted from the former Yutoku Elementary School which closed back in 2015. This transformation is part of an effort to utilize dormant assets held by local governments, aiding in regional revitalization while reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainable data center operations.

Established in August 2025, the Gunkai data center is the latest addition to High-Res's GPU-focused cloud service offering, GPUSOROBAN. With prior establishments in Shiga Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, and upcoming centers in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, this new location marks the company's expansion into Saga Prefecture.

Contribution to Local Communities

According to data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan has seen a cumulative total of 8,850 school closures from 2004 to 2023. Each year, approximately 450 schools are shut down due to declining birth rates and other factors. While roughly 70% of these closed schools have found new uses, over 1,500 still await repurposing.

The Gunkai Town Data Center is thus a vital project that makes efficient use of municipal dormant assets, simultaneously revitalizing the local community and conserving resources. By refurbishing existing facilities, High-Res has managed to significantly cut down construction costs and timeframe, enabling the delivery of high-quality services at an exceptional cost-performance ratio. Moreover, plans are underway for an additional GPU-centered data center in Ayagawa Town, Kagawa Prefecture, set to open in 2026, further supporting local revitalization efforts.

Sustainable AI Development

High-Res has set out to blend technology and local resources with the goal of fostering sustainable AI development and community growth. The company emphasizes its vision of establishing Japan as the country with the most affordable AI computational power, which supports the country’s future infrastructure in artificial intelligence.
