PowerX Secures Major Battery Storage Order from Mitsubishi Estate and Itochu Corporation

Major Battery Storage Order Received by PowerX

In a landmark venture that strengthens the renewable energy infrastructure in Japan, PowerX, based in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, has secured an order for a substantial number of battery storage systems. The order consists of 102 units of the 'Mega Power 2500' system, designed specifically for grid-scale energy storage. This project is a collective initiative with three major companies: Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd., Itochu Corporation, and Tokyo Century Corporation.

The new energy storage facility, planned for construction in Chikuzen Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, is set to commence commercial operations in fiscal year 2027. As the Kyushu region witnesses an increase in renewable energy installations, the challenge of output regulation has become pressing. The battery storage facility will connect to the electricity grid, providing essential charge and discharge cycles that enhance the stability of power supply and mitigate output regulation issues.

The PowerX × Bluestorage co-brand initiative, undertaken by PowerX and Itochu Corporation, will deploy these systems in the new storage facility.

Project Details

  • - Battery Storage System: PowerX has confirmed that the 'Mega Power 2500' will be implemented as part of the project. This compact system is designed in a 10-foot container format, adhering to ISO standards.
  • - Facility Location: The Chikuzen Town storage facility is situated in the Asakura District of Fukuoka Prefecture.
  • - Total Battery Containers: A total of 102 storage units will be utilized, designed to handle a rated capacity of 230.1 MWh, which is equivalent to the daily power consumption of approximately 21,500 households.
  • - Power Conversion System Output: The facility will feature a power conversion system (PCS) output of 67 MW, further illustrating its capacity to support the grid.

Investment and Support

The joint venture project has notably received approval for funding through the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as part of the Fiscal Year 2027 Renewable Energy Expansion and Energy Storage System Support Program. This government endorsement highlights the importance of the initiative towards achieving Japan’s ambitious carbon neutrality goals.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

PowerX, through the development and manufacturing of advanced battery storage systems, reaffirms its commitment to contributing to Japan's carbon neutrality achievements. This collaboration not only enhances energy security but also positions the involved companies at the forefront of the energy transition, underscoring their roles in the shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

Conclusion

As renewable energy continues to gain momentum, projects like the Chikuzen Town battery storage facility signify a critical step in balancing electricity supply and demand effectively. With the collaborative effort of PowerX, Mitsubishi Estate, Itochu, and Tokyo Century, this venture promises to enhance grid stability while advancing the renewable energy agenda in Japan. Further financial details regarding this project will be disclosed in upcoming fiscal year reports, as the firms work towards a greener future.
