Application for World Agricultural Heritage Sites in Japan Now Open to Communities

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan has announced the opening of applications for the recognition of World Agricultural Heritage and Japanese Agricultural Heritage sites. This initiative aims to preserve and promote traditional agricultural, forestry, and fisheries practices for future generations. By encouraging communities to apply for this recognition, the government hopes to maintain vital agricultural systems that hold significant cultural and ecological importance.

What is World Agricultural Heritage?

The World Agricultural Heritage designation is a system established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It recognizes regions engaged in globally significant and traditional agricultural, forestry, and fisheries practices. This designation not only helps to preserve these invaluable systems but also fosters sustainable development by promoting their importance to a wider audience.

What is Japanese Agricultural Heritage?

Meanwhile, the Japanese Agricultural Heritage system serves a similar purpose within the country, overseen by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It focuses on recognizing regions that practice significant and traditional agricultural systems characterized by their cultural heritage. This recognition aims to honor local practices while ensuring they continue to thrive in the future.

Application Period

Applications for these recognitions will be accepted from January 20 to June 17, 2023, until 5:00 PM. Interested regions must submit their applications within this timeframe to be considered for the review process.

Eligibility Criteria

Communities should meet the following criteria to be eligible:
1. Regions wishing to apply for the World Agricultural Heritage recognition.

This session aims to provide guidance to potential applicants. Approximately 100 connections will be available, including spots for media representatives.
