A Journey of Hope: Vice Adm. Manson K. Brown's 2,170-Mile Ride
Retired Vice Adm. Manson K. Brown has recently achieved a remarkable feat, completing a solo, unsupported bicycle ride spanning 2,170 miles from the sun-kissed shores of Key West, Florida, all the way to Bar Harbor, Maine. This incredible journey, which took place over many days, was not merely an adventure; it was a mission to support families of Coast Guard members through the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA).
On June 11, 2026, as he crossed the finish line, Brown was met with a warm welcome from numerous supporters including Coast Guard members, retirees, Auxiliarists, and community allies, all gathered at The Town Pier in Bar Harbor to celebrate this significant accomplishment.
As Brown gears up to celebrate his 70th birthday next month, his initial goal for this monumental ride was to raise $3,000 to assist families of those who serve. To his amazement, this single challenge turned into a rallying cry that raised more than $25,700—over eight times the target. Each mile cycled not only honored his personal milestone, but also sought to shed light on the hardships faced by these families who shoulder the weight of service, sacrifice, and uncertainty.
Brown articulated the essence of his ride, stating, "As Coast Guard members, we spend our careers answering the call for others. This ride was about answering the call for Coast Guard families. Behind every mission is a family carrying the weight of service, sacrifice, and uncertainty. Supporting those families is worth every mile."
The mission of the U.S. Coast Guard extends beyond just safeguarding almost 95,000 miles of coastline. They play a crucial role in facilitating over $5 trillion in annual commerce, conducting search-and-rescue operations, interdicting narcotics, and safeguarding national security missions worldwide. In alignment with this mission, CGMA acts as the backbone support for Coast Guard members and their families, offering emergency financial assistance, education programs, disaster relief, and various support services designed to alleviate the strains faced by active-duty personnel, Reservists, retirees, civilian employees, Auxiliarists, and surviving spouses.
According to Jason Wong, Chief Operating Officer of CGMA, "For over 100 years, CGMA has answered the call when Coast Guard families face life's unexpected challenges. Vice Adm. Brown's journey reminds Coast Guard families that they never face hardship alone." In 2025 alone, CGMA provided over $12.1 million in direct assistance to more than 4,000 Coast Guard members, including about $2 million in emergency aid to Coast Guard civilians during a recent government shutdown.
Notably, Brown’s ride comes at a time when recent studies indicate that more than 27 percent of military families grapple with food insecurity. Moreover, CGMA has reported a threefold increase in requests for debt management support over the past three years, largely attributable to rising living expenses and inflation.
Despite the physical challenges posed by the elements—heat, rain, and terrain changes—Brown persisted under his mantra, "One Man. One Mission. Helping Our Own." This campaign not only aimed to raise funds but also sought to foster awareness about CGMA’s mission within the Coast Guard community and beyond.
Reflecting on his journey, Brown remarked, "Coast Guard families serve alongside every member who wears the uniform. If this ride helped even one family feel seen, supported, or connected to CGMA, then it was worth it."
Wong emphasized the collective spirit of the Coast Guard community, stating, "People responded because they saw authenticity, service, and commitment. This was never about cycling. It was about reminding Coast Guard families that someone will always answer the call for them."
As Brown crossed the finish line amidst cheers, flanked by a U.S. Coast Guard Color Guard rendering honors, it marked a fulfilling conclusion to a journey celebrating his life while reaffirming the need to support the families of those who serve. Donations supporting Coast Guard families through CGMA are still being accepted; those who wish to contribute or learn more can visit

With a legacy marked by service, Manson K. Brown's continued commitment to uplifting Coast Guard families serves as an inspiring reminder of the collective strength found within military communities.
