Burning Man Celebrates 40 Years: Join the Global Movement of Creation
Celebrating 40 Years of Burning Man: A Global Call to Create Together
The Burning Man Project is proud to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the iconic festival, marking this milestone with a heartfelt invitation for communities worldwide to unite, create, and participate. As the summer solstice approaches, set to take place on June 21, individuals are encouraged to organize their own celebrations, where creativity ignites and connections flourish. This momentous occasion reflects the spirit of collaboration that has been pivotal to Burning Man since its inception in 1986.
Originally a small gathering on Baker Beach in San Francisco, Burning Man transitioned to its current home in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada in 1990. Over the decades, this event has transformed into a global cultural phenomenon, attracting over one million participants each year through Black Rock City. Moreover, more than 100 regional events occur across the globe, accompanied by numerous makerspaces, civic initiatives, art projects, and community gatherings.
At its core, Burning Man embodies the belief that life's most significant experiences come from our ability to create rather than simply consume. This anniversary not only celebrates four decades of vibrant culture but also serves as a call to envision what new magic can be conjured together over the next forty years.
Marian Goodell, CEO of the Burning Man Project, states, “Burning Man started with a simple act of gathering, creating, and inviting others to join in. Forty years later, that invitation remains open. Wherever you are, create something. Gather together in ways that mirror your own communities and creativity. Make art. Contribute to something larger than yourself.” This ethos encourages participants to engage in acts of creativity, fostering a sense of unity and belonging that extends far beyond the festival itself.
On June 21, the Burning Man Project invites people to contribute to a global solstice celebration. By collaborating as artists, builders, and friends, participants can create a shared moment of connection. By documenting and sharing these experiences on social media with the hashtag #next40burningman, the entire world can witness the collective power of creativity and community.
