Aitech's Major Contract Win in Avionics Technology
Aitech, a renowned provider of robust computing solutions tailored for the aerospace and defense industries, recently disclosed a pivotal contract valued at $63 million with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), aimed at delivering critical avionics computing systems for India’s Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) program. This contract marks a significant continuation of the long-standing collaboration between Aitech and HAL that originated in 2011.
The latest contract encompasses the provision of avionics systems intended for 156 helicopters, ensuring the ongoing production and maintenance of the Display Mission Computer (DMC) and associated flight control systems over the next five to six years. The DMC is integral to the helicopter's avionics suite, which is renowned as one of the most advanced helicopter electronics programs in India.
Aitech's involvement commenced early in the LCH program when HAL initiated the development of a next-generation avionics architecture. This architecture is distinguished by its high-performance capabilities, rugged design, and ability to support demanding real-time avionics applications, sophisticated graphics, deterministic communication, and extensive operational durations. Recognizing the unique requirements of the rotorcraft, Aitech developed a tailored CompactPCI-based single-board computer along with a graphical solution specifically designed for helicopter displays and mission processing.
In crafting these solutions, Aitech opted against a conventional off-the-shelf product. Instead, they collaborated closely with HAL engineers to adapt and qualify a COTS-derived architecture that incorporated specialized PMC modules and avionics-specific interfaces to meet the helicopter's detailed operational needs. During the development of HAL’s mission and flight software, Aitech provided comprehensive technical support, on-site collaboration, and sustainable manufacturing for flight testing and certification activities.
The Strength of Partnership
The renewed agreement not only reflects Aitech’s proven technology but also highlights the robustness of their partnership with HAL. Among the decision-making factors that led HAL to continue working with Aitech are:
1.
Established Expertise in Avionics Computing: Aitech's DMC architecture is built on high-reliability computing, advanced graphics processing, and deterministic connectivity, all of which are core competencies in Aitech’s avionics portfolio.
2.
Long-term Sustainability Commitment: Unlike numerous other vendors, Aitech has demonstrated an ability to sustain the same qualified board designs well beyond typical lifecycles, thus preventing disruptive technology shifts mid-program.
3.
Deep Knowledge and Design Investments: The avionics computer boards are intricately integrated into the helicopter's system architecture. Replacing them would necessitate a complete redesign and requalification cycle that could span several years.
4.
Continuous Technical Support: From early characterization to certification and authorization, Aitech engineers painstakingly collaborated with HAL to ensure thorough integration, performance, and qualification of avionics solutions.
Since its inception over four decades ago, Aitech has been influential in developing systems that address complex challenges faced in military applications, whether on land, in the air, or even in space. This recent agreement emphasizes Aitech's commitment to supporting HAL by fulfilling its urgent requirements for a long-term avionics computing partner, offering not just exceptional performance but also vital continuity—an essential aspect for intricate aerospace platforms.
As commented by Gil Botton, vice president and head of business development for Aitech in South-East Asia and EMEA, “HAL chose Aitech because we have provided innovative solutions from the start of the project and have been involved in every phase to date. Our contributions have been pivotal in HAL’s initial successes, providing technical know-how, computational expertise, and manufacturing discipline to support avionics systems over not just years, but decades.”
