Tempura Specialty Store Tsunahachi to Undergo Major Renovation and New Location Opening

Major Changes Coming to Tsunahachi's Shinjuku Flagship

Tsunahachi, a renowned name in the tempura dining sector, has announced exciting changes for its flagship store in Shinjuku. Founded over a century ago, this establishment has been a cornerstone of Japanese cuisine for generations. However, the building that houses it has faced challenges due to aging and safety concerns.

With the decision made to rebuild the existing structure, Tsunahachi will temporarily close its doors on May 31, 2026. The flagship store, which has stood for 77 years, has welcomed many loyal patrons, some of whom have been visiting for three generations. The restaurant will mark its final days with a special menu as a gesture of gratitude to its dedicated customers.

The company's representative, Shumura Sho, expressed hope that guests will keep fond memories of the original building alive. The much-loved retro appearance of the store has been part of its charm, but to continue providing exceptional service, a rebuilding was necessary.

In the interim, a new location, Tsunahachi Shinjuku Main Store Annex, will open on June 23, 2026, just a minute’s walk from the original spot. This new establishment will maintain the same taste and quality that Tsunahachi is known for, ensuring that the dining experience remains unchanged for its loyal customers. The staff will be the same, dedicated to serving the best tempura and traditional Japanese cuisine.

The planned renovations of the flagship store will focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors once it opens in the summer of 2028. The materials from the existing building will be partially reused, reflecting a commitment to sustainability even as the restaurant advances into the future.

As Japan's food culture continues to diversify, Tsunahachi aims to honor traditional Japanese dining, particularly the Edo-style culinary approach, while innovating and evolving to resonate with younger generations. This balance of heritage and modernity is crucial to preserving the essence of Japanese gastronomy.

With excitement brewing around both the closure of the old building and the opening of the new one, both long-time customers and new diners can look forward to a revitalized dining experience that pays homage to its beloved predecessor.
