PowerX Opens First Highway EV Charging Station in Japan

The new charging station features two units of PowerX’s Hypercharger, a state-of-the-art battery-based ultra-rapid EV charger capable of delivering a maximum output of 150 kW. This ensures swift and efficient charging even for larger capacity EVs, allowing users to recharge their vehicles quickly and get back on the road. With a total of four charging points, the station is designed to accommodate several vehicles simultaneously, making it an ideal stop for travelers.

Innovative Pricing Model

In a first for charging stations located on Japan's highways, PowerX has introduced a pay-per-use pricing structure that charges users based on the amount of electricity consumed rather than time spent charging. This approach provides a clearer and more equitable pricing model for all EV owners, standing in contrast to the traditional time-based charging that can often lead to unfair billing.

Convenient Location

The Highway Oasis Tomari boasts an accessible location, just an hour's drive from downtown Tokyo, making it a perfect pitstop for those heading towards the scenic Minami-Boso area for leisure or exploration. In addition to the charging facilities, visitors can enjoy a range of amenities at the adjacent Roadside Station Tomari-Tomiayama. Here, travelers can shop for fresh local produce and grab a bite to eat in the food court while their vehicles recharge.

Regional Collaboration and Forward Planning

This initiative is part of PowerX's commitment to enhancing EV charging infrastructure in collaboration with the National Roadside Station Liaison Council. To date, the company has successfully established charging stations at seven roadside locations across the nation, with Tomari marking the fourth station in Chiba Prefecture alone. There is a rising demand from the public for more charging stations along highways, and PowerX aims to expand its services.

Operational Details

The newly opened charging station provisions include:

• - Location: Inside the parking area of Highway Oasis Tomari, Futtsu-Tateyama Road, Minami-Boso City, Chiba Prefecture (accessible only via toll roads).
• - Installation: Two battery-based ultra-rapid EV chargers, each with a maximum output of 150 kW (in boost mode) and 120 kW (for continuous output).
• - Operating Hours: Open 24 hours a day, year-round.
• - Eligible Vehicles: Available for electric vehicles compatible with the CHAdeMO charging standard. Note that some vehicle models may not be supported.
• - Pricing: Pay-per-use rates range from 65-75 yen/kWh for the general public and 45-55 yen/kWh for PowerX First members. Charging sessions can last up to 30 minutes.
• - Start of Operations: The charging station is fully operational as of May 30, 2023.
