Idaho® Potatoes and the American Diabetes Association® Join Forces
In celebration of American Diabetes Month, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have united to confront common misconceptions about one of America’s beloved foods: potatoes. This collaboration aims to educate the public about the nutritional value of Idaho® potatoes, emphasizing that they can be a healthy component of a balanced diet.
Idaho® potatoes have received recognition from the ADA's Better Choices for Life program. This initiative assists consumers in identifying food choices that align with the organization's nutritional guidelines. Sheila Varshney, RDN and Associate Director of Nutrition and Wellness at the ADA, stated, "Potatoes provide complex carbohydrates, potassium, vitamin C, and fiber, and can be enjoyed as part of balanced meals alongside lean proteins and non-starchy vegetables."
The new campaign, aptly titled "Mashing the Myth," seeks to address persistent nutritional myths about potatoes, such as the belief that they cause spikes in blood sugar levels or lead to weight gain. This initiative is backed by ADA experts, providing scientifically-supported information and simple cooking tips to incorporate potatoes into diabetes-friendly meals. It highlights how small changes in cooking methods, such as roasting or air-frying, can transform potatoes into a nutritious option for any meal.
To promote these insights, the ADA is hosting a free virtual cooking class called "Holiday Potato Side Dishes, Three Ways," on November 6 at 4:00 PM PST. Led by Chef Joel and Toby Smithson, a registered dietitian and diabetes authority, this class will showcase three delicious potato recipes that align with diabetes management while still being flavorful and satisfying.
Participants can dive deeper into the campaign to learn more about the myths surrounding potatoes and discover a wealth of mouthwatering Idaho potato recipes at
idahopotato.com. Recipe highlights include Grilled Potato Ratatouille Salad, Mashed Potato Omelet, and Kale Potato Nuggets, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Established in 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission is dedicated to safeguarding the prestigious "Grown in Idaho®" seal, which guarantees consumers are purchasing authentic, high-quality Idaho® potatoes. Thanks to Idaho’s ideal growing conditions—warm days, cool nights, mountain-fed irrigation, and rich volcanic soil—Idaho® potatoes are distinguished by their unique texture and flavor, setting them apart from spuds cultivated in other regions.
In summary, the partnership between Idaho® Potatoes and the ADA highlights the true nutritional potential of potatoes. As the campaign demonstrates, educating consumers about how to enjoy this versatile food can help dispel myths and promote a balanced diet, particularly for individuals affected by diabetes. By embracing healthier preparation methods and understanding portion sizes, Idaho® potatoes can indeed be a nutritious and satisfying component of a wholesome eating plan.
