Tellus Partners with JAXA in Satellite Data Initiative
Tellus, Inc., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is set to make significant strides in satellite data utilization through its collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). On June 10, 2025, the company participated in the kickoff meeting for JAXA's space strategy fund initiative focused on overseas demonstrations of satellite data utilization systems, marking the official start of the project.
Overview of Technological Development Efforts
The project is spearheaded by the Japan Forum Foundation, which proposed the technical development challenge to JAXA aimed at establishing a foundation for utilizing satellite data systems abroad. This proposal received acceptance on February 7, 2025.
The initiative aims to integrate advanced spatial technologies with ground data, AI, machine learning, big data, and IoT. By partnering with companies that seek to deploy satellite data solutions internationally, the project aims to foster social implementation in the global market. Concrete efforts will include establishing local offices and coordinators, influencing local space policies and strategies, conducting outreach activities, and building business schemes with local partners. These multifaceted initiatives are designed to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders and local businesses in the Asia-Pacific region. The goal is to generate tens of billions of yen in new business opportunities, aiming to create between three to five viable projects through enhancing the necessary environment for sustainable solutions.
Tellus is one of six entities participating in this collaborative effort, taking on the responsibility of foundational development. The company will focus on creating schemes that promote capacity building aimed at sustainable market expansion and development of local business partnerships.
The targeted countries for this project include Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Tellus aims to tailor sustainable mechanisms that meet local needs, effectively supporting the development of satellite data utilization.
Future Outlook for Tellus
With this initiative, Tellus plans to expand its satellite data platform across the Asia-Pacific region, where the demand for satellite data utilization is increasing. The company is committed to delivering new solutions by combining AI with satellite data, aspiring to become a central hub for satellite data distribution across Asia.
