Mazda Partners with U.S. DOT to Enhance Roadway Safety Across America

On January 17, 2025, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) proudly announced their collaboration with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) as part of the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS). This initiative aims to significantly decrease roadway fatalities and promote a safer driving environment throughout the nation.

The U.S. DOT initiated a Call to Action Campaign in 2023 focused on the NRSS, encouraging stakeholders to participate in the collective effort to end traffic-related deaths. This campaign focuses on five key areas: safer people, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer speeds, and improved post-crash care. As a prominent participant, Mazda has committed to specific actions that underscore their mission to enhance road safety.

Mazda's President and CEO, Tom Donnelly, expressed the company's dedication to this vital cause, stating, “Mazda is proud to join the U.S. DOT in its goal to reduce roadway fatalities. With the help of our dedicated engineers and designers, Mazda is working hard toward its goal of zero deaths resulting from our new vehicles by 2040.” This ambitious target reflects Mazda's commitment to not only producing vehicles but also contributing to the overall safety of the communities they serve.

To bolster their safety efforts, all new Mazda vehicles released from the 2024 model year will feature state-of-the-art safety systems. These systems include Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking. Moreover, Mazda recognizes the importance of ensuring the safety of younger passengers and has introduced audible seat belt reminders across all seating positions. Additionally, the 2025 model year will see the introduction of rear seat reminders to help caregivers avoid the tragic mishap of leaving children in overheated vehicles.

Mazda doesn’t just stop at safety features; the brand is dedicated to rigorous testing and design standards, achieving more 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other car brand. This relentless pursuit of safety is integrated into every aspect of Mazda vehicles, underlining their commitment to driver and passenger safety.

The National Roadway Safety Strategy represents a comprehensive approach to tackle the rising traffic fatalities and injuries on American roads. The NRSS advocates for a collective societal change towards road safety, urging every organization and individual to participate in reducing deaths and injuries on highways and residential streets. Mazda's engagement reflects a larger movement that aims to shift the national mindset regarding road safety and prioritize proactive measures to prevent tragedies before they occur.
