Hermeus, a pioneering venture-backed defense aviation firm, has made headlines by appointing Kim Nakamaru as its General Counsel. This strategic decision, announced on April 14, 2026, emphasizes the company's commitment to advancing its legal framework amid its ambitious aerospace projects.

Kim Nakamaru is well-equipped to bring over 15 years of experience in providing counsel to both public and private sector companies. With a decade dedicated specifically to the aerospace, aviation, and advanced manufacturing fields, her background is perfectly aligned with the needs of Hermeus as it navigates the complex world of defense aviation.

Before joining Hermeus, Nakamaru made significant contributions to Relativity Space, a prominent American company specializing in reusable rocket technology. During her tenure as General Counsel there, she led a wide array of operations encompassing legal, regulatory, safety, and security efforts, all while managing personnel relations. Her insights and leadership played a crucial role in establishing the infrastructure necessary for scaling complex aerospace operations spanning manufacturing, testing, and launch environments.

Nakamaru’s previous experience also includes key leadership positions at EagleView, which is known in the geospatial technology sector, and Global Eagle Entertainment (currently Anuvu), a connectivity provider for various sectors including government applications. Her diverse experiences enrich her capabilities, ensuring she can adeptly navigate the increasingly intricate legal and regulatory environments pertinent to aviation today.

AJ Piplica, CEO and Founder of Hermeus, expressed confidence in Nakamaru’s abilities, stating, "Kim has navigated the most complex legal and regulatory environments in aerospace. As we push toward our next milestones, that experience is critical to moving fast while maintaining the rigor our mission demands. Her leadership is a significant addition to the team at a pivotal time for the company."

In her own words, Nakamaru reflected on her career, saying, "I've spent my career helping companies solve hard problems in complex, high-stakes environments and am drawn to undertakings that seem impossible. Hermeus is tackling a challenge that doesn't have a playbook and is pushing the boundaries of possibility in aviation. I’m excited to help build the systems and strategies that enable the team to move quickly from breakthrough engineering to real-world capability."

Hermeus has a reputation for challenging the norms within the aerospace sector, reclaiming the art of rapid iterative prototyping to develop the fastest aircraft in existence. By focusing relentlessly on hardware iteration, Hermeus aims to create high-speed systems that meet the demands of modern warfare situations. The company collaborates closely with the Department of War, emphasizing its mission to deliver the high-speed capabilities necessary for the United States and its allies.

This latest appointment enhances Hermeus's executive leadership, ensuring the company is well-prepared to tackle upcoming challenges. Nakamaru's impressive qualifications, including her J.D. from Loyola Law School and B.A. from Princeton University, position her as a formidable asset to the company. Furthermore, her involvement on the board of the California Women's Law Center showcases her commitment to advocacy and supporting diversity within the legal field.

As Hermeus continues to innovate within the aerospace realm, Kim Nakamaru’s role as General Counsel is set to be instrumental.
