The Launch of HPSC ESPORTS LAB: A New Era for eSports in Japan

The Launch of HPSC ESPORTS LAB

On July 31, 2023, the Japan eSports Union (JESU), led by President Hideki Hayakawa, announced a significant development in the nation's eSports landscape: the establishment of the HPSC ESPORTS LAB at the Ajinomoto National Training Center. This cutting-edge facility aims to elevate Japan's international competitiveness in eSports by leveraging sports science, medical expertise, and advanced technology.

The HPSC ESPORTS LAB is a part of the High Performance Sport Center (HPSC) set up by the Japan Sport Council (JSC). Its primary mission is to support and enhance the performance of eSports athletes through rigorous scientific training and research. With the 20th Asian Games set to begin in September 2026 in Aichi and Nagoya, where eSports will officially be featured as a medal sport, this initiative is crucial for the country's preparation and representation at the international level.

During the launch event, eSports representatives, including Heishi Kitada (eFootball™/PC) and Yuki Kurihara (Puyo Puyo eSports), showcased the state-of-the-art training environment equipped with the latest performance monitoring tools. Attendees were able to observe demonstrations that included eye-tracking, heart rate monitoring, and surface temperature assessments, all designed to measure and enhance athlete performance in real-time.

In addition to training, the HPSC ESPORTS LAB will utilize expertise gained from HPSC's long history in sports science and medicine to offer tailored support for eSports players, allowing them to achieve unprecedented levels of performance. The lab represents Japan's commitment to producing world-class eSports athletes and the potential to redefine training methodologies in the gaming sector.

The JESU plans to continue leveraging the HPSC ESPORTS LAB as a pioneering facility to improve the skills of eSports athletes, focusing on scientific approaches to training that have been successful in traditional sports. This initiative is vital for fostering talent and enhancing Japan's visibility in the global eSports arena.
