Engage with Japanese Folklore at the Canal Side Projection Mapping Event
From March 20 to 23, 2026, the renowned artistic production company Hitohata will present the stunning "Tennozu Canal Side Projection Mapping × Moving Yokai Exhibition TOKYO" at Tennozu Canal East in Tokyo, transforming the area into a vibrant display of traditional Japanese folklore.
This event serves as a collaborative initiative with the upcoming "Moving Yokai Exhibition TOKYO - Imagination of Japan," scheduled to run from March 27 to June 28, 2026, at Terada Warehouse's G1 Building. The striking projection mapping will take place on the buildings lining the Tennozu Canal and even on the water's surface, showcasing various yokai — mythical creatures from Japanese folklore. Visitors will witness well-known mythical figures, including the "Gashadokuro" and other characters from famous ukiyo-e prints, alongside highlights from the "Hyakki Yagyo" and spirited beings like the "Kappa" and "Nurarihyon." Each digital animation promises to evoke the beauty of Japan's yokai artistry in a captivating manner.
What to Expect
In conjunction with this extraordinary visual experience, there will also be opportunities for a unique greeting where attendees can take photos with the water-dwelling yokai, a character named Ebo Shikaeru. This special interaction will take place nightly from March 20 to 22, offering three session times at 18:30, 19:30, and 20:30.
The overall theme combines elements of Edo-period waterfront charm with the vivid imaginations surrounding yokai, making it a must-see event for both locals and tourists alike. The projections range from stunning digital animations to real-time interactions, bringing forward the rich cultural narratives embedded in Japan’s folklore.
Additionally, the projection mapping sequences will occur continuously, with each approximately six-minute presentation followed by three-minute intermissions. This ensures that attendees will experience a full spectrum of delight throughout each evening, regardless of weather conditions. However, in the event of severe weather, projections may pause or be canceled.
Accessibility and Admission
One of the significant advantages of this event is that entry is completely free and does not require prior registration, allowing guests to fully embrace this cultural experience without barriers. It’s an exceptional opportunity to engage with Japan’s storytelling traditions in a dynamic setting.
The event is organized by
