JTOWER Secures Landmark 26GHz Band Regional Spectrum Allocation
In a significant milestone for Japan's telecommunications landscape, JTOWER Inc. (President & CEO: Atsushi Tanaka), headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has secured approval from the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications for the allocation of the 26.8–27.0GHz regional blocks. This follows JTOWER’s successful bid in a spectrum auction on June 30, 2026, aimed at promoting the deployment of fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication systems.
The spectrum auction introduced by the ministry represents a transformative change in frequency allocation practices, targeting high-frequency bands beyond 6GHz. The structure includes two categories: a Nationwide Block for broad coverage and designated Regional Blocks aimed at localized service enhancements. These Regional Blocks are strategically designed to encourage entry from new and incumbent local operators, further enriching Japan’s telecommunications ecosystem.
JTOWER has successfully obtained approvals for 13 regions, including major urban centers such as the 23 wards of Tokyo, Yokohama City, Osaka City, Nagoya City, Fukuoka City, and Chiba City. This achievement positions JTOWER as the first infrastructure sharing operator in Japan to obtain such spectrum allocation, enabling them to provide cutting-edge telecommunications services. With this newly sanctioned spectrum, JTOWER plans to enhance its current service offerings that include both indoor infrastructure sharing and outdoor tower sharing.
The implications of this approval are expansive, allowing JTOWER to design and develop advanced telecommunications environments tailored to meet regional needs. This novel approach stands as a testament to JTOWER's commitment to pioneering an infrastructure sharing model recognized globally. By utilizing the allocated spectrum, the company aims to create a comprehensive communication framework that fosters enhanced connectivity in urban and rural sectors alike.
As JTOWER progresses, the company pledges to engage actively with local governments, telecommunications providers, and partner enterprises. Through collaboration and dialogue, JTOWER aspires to address specific regional challenges and devise innovative solutions that cater to evolving communication demands.
